More City-States!

Umm.... Jakarta ? :D

I mean, it is even bigger than Singapore... ;):p:D

It's location isn't nearly as good though.

As David says the problem is for a city-state to survive it needs a very special set of circumstances. It needs to be culturally different enough from it's neighbours to prevent absorption due to, it needs to be economically significant enough to have a viable national economy without any natural resources and it needs to have some way of being protected from bigger neighbours during the start of it's development.

Singapore had all these- majority Chinese population in a Malay region, complete dominance over the second busiest shipping route in the world and semi-separate historical development from Malaya as a British Crown Colony.

Under a different set of circumstances, say the Western allies got to there before the Soviets, Berlin could be an independent city today.

Uruguay pretty much IS the city-state of Montevideo. It just chooses to call itself Uruguay. Nearly 50% of the people live in Montevideo.

The same is true to a lesser extent for Paraguay and Asuncion.

And Chile and Santiago. Yet nobody would call Chile a city state. And soon enough Nigeria and Lagos. It just is the case that the cities of developing and not so much industrialsied countries draw the rural masses. But that dont make them city states.
