William Walker is probably the most famous filibusterer, having taken over bits and pieces of Central America, eventually rising to the Presidency of Nicaragua before being kicked out by a coalition of neighboring powers and internal dissent. There were other, less successful filibuster efforts as well, almost all with the intent of expanding slave holding territory.
If Walker or other filibusterers had had more success in their ventures, perhaps locking down Nicaragua, what other adventures might have been undertaken, and to what degree of success? Could we see large numbers of adventurers leaving the South to lord over semi-feudal estates in Central, and even South America? If so, could this maybe be a pressure release valve for Southern pro-slavery sentiment, making the Planter elite less likely to panic over the growth of anti-slavery sentiment in the US, with other parts of the "Golden Circle" under their influence?
