Mongols in America

Can anyone think of scenario of how the mongols could have reached the Americas? Most likely through eastern Siberia.

What kind of effects would have been from that?

What would Mongols do in America? Go home quickly, I suppose.
See thread on Australia for reasons.
honestly, what's next, Mongols in Hawaii? Mongols in the Antarctis?

The only reasonable idea I can think of is if the Mongols maintain their hold on the Empire, particularly China and Korea (and possibly Japan if the invasion succeeded). Then explorers or some lost ships find their way across the Pacific and return with news. If Japan is taken and the empire doesn't fracture quite so much I can see a scenario where expeditions to discover more lands are undertaken.

I think reaching it through eastern Siberia is really unlikely for the same reason it never happened in OTL, it's a miserable place with no reason to visit and nothing of any particular value. Even today almost nobody lives there.

The Mongols taking Japan might be an excellent POD. I mean, there is no where else to go but out (and i suppose down)

Mongol expansion is, above all, predicated on the idea of capturing enough loot/tribute to send back to the Mongol leaders, who then distribute it in a way that maintains their grip on power.

So I'm quite sure that if tales of the 'wealth' of the Americas is somehow revealed to the Mongols (maybe a fisherman gets blown off course and lands in a gold-rich Amerindian civilization), you'd definitely see some outlandish Mongol plan to go send some people to the Americas to check it out. With a bit of luck, the expedition reaches America and the rumors are confirmed - lots of gold with weak natives. That pretty much guarantees that a Mongol fleet will be outfitted in an attempt to capture that plunder.

It's difficult to see how they would have succeeded, though, given the distances involved. The 'gold-rich' Amerindian population centers of Mexico and the Andes are also not very horse-friendly.

How about if say China colonizes the west coast...and the plains dwelling tribes adopt horses as they escape or something...and they develop into a local homegrown horde that attacks the settlements, much as the Mongols would?
