Mongols Conquer Japan

Let's suppose that the Mongols under the Yuan dynasty manage to secure their foothold on Kyushu island, and move up the Japanese archipelago, eventually conquering Japan with the exception of a few holdouts here and there.

How much of an impact on history would a Mongol conquest of Japan would have made?

I'd envision something similar to Yuan China.

Well, I can only guess that Japan would be another province of Yuan China, as Korea was. Now, the Mongols did not try to culturally convert China, IIRC, so there might not be a great deal of changes in Japan, and it might be treated as another province of the Great Mongol Empire. In fact, there might even be some Sinicization of Japan, as its treated as a province of a Chinese Empire with a Mongol Ruler.

Will have to get back to this later, I need more info.

For me It mostly means a more open Japan with all the butterflies this carries with can be huge.

And what about the Khan dynasty surviving as rulers of Japan. That would be really awesome:D

Relatively little, probably. Any Mongol control over Japan would probably be fairly weak or indirect unless there are serious changes earlier on. Ultimately, Japan was fairly insignificant then, with no great mineral or human resources to offer nor any geopolitical significance other than prestige value.

Have you heard of butterflies?

This early in the game those butterflies will be huge by this point.

Don't expect anything to be remotely similar.

No USA, no UK, etc.

Erm, when did I mention either the UK or the USA? What does Japan have to offer the Mongols? There aren't any great seams of minerals they need, no great scholars or artisans to add to the Khan's entourage; no huge numbers of peasants to toil for the universal ruler. What can it bring? Some modest tax revenue and prestige-the knowledge that you'be conquered islands that as far as you know are the edge of the earth. Other than that they're pretty much useless in the 14th century.

There was a thread about this some time ago. I don't think that it went far. But the main changes were cultural. The samurai lost any political clout they had and became elite soldiers, the emperor delegated most ritual to a subordinate so he could have more time to run the country. The mongols eventually lost control, and they started using some of their tricks by conquering nearby countries and turning them into tribute states.
