Mongol Japan

What would likely be the effects of a successful Mongol invasion and occupation of Japan. Say the Kamikaze never occurs and the Mongols manage to land safely. The Samurai were used to fighting one on one, and were unprepared for the mass attacks that characterised the Mongol Hordes. I would think Japan would most likely fall if the Mongols managed to invade.

But what effects would it have on Japanese history? Does a Khanate of Japan sound possible? What kind of long-term effects are likely to spawn from this?

Japan is pretty mountainous. I can see the Mongols leaving hostile-Japanese enclaves in the mountains, they'll never grow much because of a lack of arable land and are too costly to root out.

The fact is that the Mongol invasion had a relatively small chance of succeeding in both invasions. First, the Mongols simply weren't used to sea invasions, as also seen in their sea invasion of Vietnam. Second, the terrain of Japan made any use of cavalry more or less useless, and the Japanese forces did actually win in some of the land battles even without the storms.

Further, many of the boats used by the Mongols were flat-bottomed river boats, a fact that seems eerily similar to a certain sea animal...

Whilst that is certainly true, my main reason for starting the thread was to see the effects of Mongol Occupation on Japan and its potential futures. So whilst the invasion itself was unlikely, its the occupation I am curious about.

Lance cavalry. But weren't mounted archers a long time staple? I am almost sure they pre-date the Mongol invasion.

They did. I don't remember if mounted archery still was as big as it was in the earlier periods, but samurai in the late Heian era fought primarily with bows.
