Mongol Empire - Genghis Khan Lives longer.

Folks, we all know that the Mongol empire was the second biggest empire ever after the British Empire, Yeah? We know that Genghis Khan died in 1241, just as the Mongol army was preparing an assult on Vienna. as a result of this the Mongol armies went back to Mongolia to pay their respects to the dead emperor.

I wonder if Genghis Khan had lived longer would the Mongol Armies have been able to extend their empire further and smash their way accross the rest of Europe and mabye even attempt an invasion of England at this time? England and scotland were at war by this point, so I wonder what effect the Invasion of England would have been by the Mongols?

I could easily see the Mongols reaching into France, but I doubt that they'd keep it for too long. As for England, most probably not. At this point, the hordes would be far overextended, and the Mongols never went into naval combat much either. See the attempted invasion of Japan; it's much closer to the Mongols' power base (China), yet they still failed.

Now for your scenario, let's assume that the Mongols get as far as France and are only stopped by the Pyrenees and Alps, so Italy and the Balkans are more or less Mongol-free. The hordes have effectively subjugated France, Germany, Poland, and Central Europe. Let's also assume that the general in charge decides that England poses the greatest threat, and orders a fleet built for an invasion.

Result: The majority of the troops sent will not make it, the rest will be defeated through attrition and the hostile terrain of southern England (marches+horsemen=failure). The effect: England will lose huge amounts of land to Scotland, which will have take the chance to surge forward. England decentralizes as the dukes and earls insist on higher authority. Overall: Stronger Scotland, possibly balkanized England, advanced cavalry techniques conveniently deposited in Europe.

Oh, and for the record, Ghengis died in the 1220s. It was the death of Ogedei Khan that forced the generals of the European theater to return to Mongolia.

Ah, thanks....I've often wondered how much damage the Mongols could've done had Gengis Khan survived a few years longer!!!

Allow me to ask...would this mean that England as a unified nation would be be wrecked for good and there may never have been a British Empire at all?

Hpw long would you say the Hordes would've stayed in France for?

Again, you probably mean Ogedei Khan, the empire was at the height during his reign, Ghengis just started it all.

Not neccesarily, bigger bounce-backs have been made. However, any English-derived empire in TTL would most certainly not be British due to the island being divided in half as opposed to 3/4 English, giving the Scots much better chances.

It depends. I would guess, like elsewhere, after the Mongol Empire itself collapsed, individual hordes would gain their independence. In this case, a "European Horde" would probably form out of France, Germany, Poland, Hungary, and Austria. It would likely collapse after a while, but Tartar culture would probably be imbued into Europe, which would lead to a great emphasis on cavalry in the following centuries.
