Mongol Canada and America?

What if the Mongols at the height of their power had crossed the Bering Strait and taken over Canada and America, turning it into part of their empire? Would that be technically possible? If they could have got over there, they would not have faced foes capable of beating them off until they reached Aztec Mexico.

Why? Ignoring whether it's technically possible, there's a first step to these Pre-Columbian contact scenarios and it's answering why somebody would bother doing it. Eastern Siberia is not a rich place, nor is it a hospitable one. I can't think of a reason why the Mongols would want to go there, and then take ships across the rough waters of the Arctic Ocean into the unknown, where they'll first reach the barren Aleutian Islands, and then keep on going into places still bereft of loot or good pasture.

Because they thought that they were marked by Heaven to conquer the whole world, and those places are part of the world?

The Mongols were a practical people, they conquered places that gave them things like riches or decent land. They don't even know America exists and if they did find it across the Bering Straits they'd be sending troops to a harsh, barren, wasteland when they could be fighting the khan's enemies in Asia or Europe.

Maybe the Yuan dynasty survives and an expedition goes there?

Not too likely given that the Yuan have no reason, but that's the best I came come up with to get "Mongols" there.

Again-why? They didnt know there was anything to send an expedition TO. It isnt like the Bering Straight was part of their known world and they had a Mongolian Sarah Palin saying "I can see Alaska from my house".

"Plunder, Baby, Plunder!"

"But obviously we gotta stand with our Khwarezmi allies."

The Khural doesn't choose the Great Khan, Heaven does.

Hence the "not too likely" part of my post.

Even if it isn't likely there's always a chance, even a small one, that someone might sail there and survive, even by mistake (like Iceland).

No. There isnt. Mongols and other nations in that area arent heavy in shipping and ocean exploring and the Japanese even never had this accident happen. There's a difference between wishing something that was technically feasible would happen, and the idea there was a chance it could. Yes, it was technologically possible, but other parts if pre-POD history would preclude it from ever happening.

It was technically impossible for the Yuan dynasty to get there?

Umm... ok. I don't know much about them or if they had fundamentally bad ocean going technology so I'll defer.

Read my post. I said the opposite of what think. Perhaps the word feasible is throwing you off? It means possible. I said it was technically possible, but other parts of the pre-pod history precludes it (makes it impossible)

Sorry I read quickly.
