suppose that everything goes right for the Vikings: Harald Hardrada wins the Battle of Stamford Bridge, becoming the King of Norway and England, and subsequently repels the Norman invasion led by William. going on the assumption that the resulting Viking Empire survives to the modern day (even if it vanishes in the 20th century), what would be the maximum extent of its empire, and how would its presence affect the rest of the world? would a country similar to the United States still appear? what about the World Wars and decolonization?
ive always liked vikings, so much to the point that im writing a book about a fictional world based on them, so discussion here would be much appreciated. and you can bet that i'll make a map or two because of this discussion
