Modern countries in North America

How many possible countries could we have today in North America if different paths had been taken.
New Sweden in and around Delaware remained as a Swedish colony, New Netherlands around New York, New Jersey remained as Dutch, Canada remained split between the French and British, Russia kept Alaska, the numerous Spanish territories and Texas.

Alaska probably to remote to become an independent country but we could have Quebec, Canada, New England, New Sweden, New Netherlands, New France, Texas, maybe an independent Native American region or two and what would have happened to the west.

Sorry in advance if this has been done before.

Eh...this is a really hard question to answer, simply because as these countries/colonial powers expand westward, the butterflies from the initial POD necessary to maintain the colonies mean that we cannot predict how it would go.

The Dutch and Swedish colonies face a natural barrier in the form of the Appalachian mountains, which means that the midwest will likely go to the French, Spanish (though they would be overextending themselves) or English. Whoever seizes this heartland will extend to the Pacific coast, with enough time.

Alaska remaining Russian is unlikely, as has already been stated elsewhere-Russia was overextended, looking to get rid of Alaska. They'd probably sell it to the British or French ITTL.

One idea which I have promoted in the past and continue to promote is the idea that European states in the Americas create Native American micro-states as a buffer between them and potential rivals. The Spanish and Mexican invitation of refugee tribes to live on the northern border of Florida and Mexico respectively are OTL examples of how these microbuffer states could end up being formed.

It is also interesting to think about the extent to which specific religious communities might seek political independance in a balkanised North America:

The Quakers in Pennsylvania;
The Mormons if not butterflied away; or
Some kind of Native Americanised Christian States as distinct from traditional Native American Cultural States (and I am thinking of something like the Iroquois States in the Two Georges book).
