Modern Automobile Inline Eights?

If there's a good reason, problems can be overcome; that's what engineers are for. But what is the point? "Because it's neat" won't usually fly unless there's a fad among the wealthy...

My point exactly. There ought to be a market sizeable enough to keep the straight eights produced and developed, and that means some kind of conspicuous consumption subtly different from OTL, prizing the 'stately' cars over the sports and muscle ones.
 
I think once engine design engineers realized a 90° V-8 had very little vibration throughout the rev range, they dropped the idea of an I-8 engine in no time flat. Mostly because with a V-8 engine, the engine compartment could be sized a LOT smaller.

And if you want an engine compartment that fits an I-8, then put in a V-16, like the Cizeta-Moroder V16T and the modern day Cadillac Sixteen and Rolls-Royce 100EX concepts and the BMW Goldfish V-16 prototype.
