Hi all

My question is regarding this map below about the "planned Tatar republic" in pink. It says that it was planned which means material out there on it is supposedly going to be scarce. Does anyone have anything on it? More interesting as the description says it was an "area of German colonisation". Again is there any information or material on the planned Germanization of the Crimea after world war I.

The Germans weren't quite sure what to do with Crimea. They quickly realized that a Tatar republic was not viable - Tatars were only a minority in the region. So they appointed a government which was disproportionately dominated by Tatars and local Germans, but was still (formally) a neutral coalition, not some kind of Tatar republic.

One faction, led by Ludendorff, wished to turn Crimea into a German colony, populated mostly by Germans from outside Germany. The other faction, centered in the German Foreign Ministry, thought this was unrealistic and instead wanted to give Crimea to Ukraine. After a long series of discussions, Ludendorff outlined a compromise plan: give Crimea to Ukraine, but partially colonize it with Germans anyway. According to this plan, Crimea would have been some kind of a German-dominated autonomous province formally within Ukraine.

The Ukrainian government didn't wait for Berlin's permission; when the Crimean regional government refused to join Ukraine, the Hetman started a devastatingly effective economic blockade. In September 1918, the Crimeans gave up and agreed to join the Hetmanate as an autonomous province. Of course, both the Crimean and the Hetman's regime were overthrown soon after, so the whole thing didn't really get anywhere.

Very intriguing I never knew this.

So a final plan was never agreed between Ludendorff and the German foreign ministry?

The compromise plan looks viable because the Hetmanate of Ukraine was German.

Yeah, they never made a final decision AFAIK.

The compromise sounds plausible enough. Whatever else happens, I imagine Crimea would have stayed a part of Ukraine...they can't take it out of the Hetman's hands without adding some major stink to an already smelly situation.

Ludendorff was the inofficial ruler of Germany after 1916, so his wish about Crimea would be fulfilled if Germany won.
