OK, now that Mitt Romney is out of politics and Obama is not president, this isn't current politics right? The 2012-2016 term is over.
In OTL Romney tried to change some of his political positions as governor to win the primary. it was a pyrrhic victory since he couldn't win the presidency and this changing pretty much ruined his credibility.
Suppose he continued to mention Global Warming and say that the Scientific community agrees it is real and carbon emissions should be dealt with. It be the "number 4" priority of a Romney administration. The idea of a gasoline tax or a federal floor to reduce disparity between Europe and America's consumer prices by 25% is "on the table."
TTL Romney also suggests restrictions on hydraulic fracking until issues with surface water contamination can be solved (if you notice the fub, good for you).
Oil drilling in nonsensative areas can continue as normal, but places like the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge would need to wait until the company has a viable plan that wouldn't disturb it (so... probably never if we look at BP's record of planning).
His plan on fossil fuel subsidies (which I didn't know America had but apparently Wikipedia said we did) is to cut them by 25% and then phase them out in 12 years starting from year one of his administration. By the end of the Romney energy plan, all the subsidies would be gone. 75% of the funds would be used to promote renewable energy, but mainly solar power and rechargeable batteries (solar power doesn't come on demand like fossil fuels).
He stays silent on the stimulus.
Romney stays supportive of abortion rights and does not mention appoint justices that would overturn past decisions.
Romney suggests a rapprochement with Russia, that there is no need for the countries to step on each other's toes, but does float the idea that several hacks and releases of sensitive data in the past might have originated there.
The biggest change is refusing to jump the Republican bandwagon of opposing Obamacare, which became their boogeyman. He instead calls it a good idea to extend coverage to Americans but implemented poorly, promising to reduce Medicaid expansion and some nebulous "tweaks." He also says Massachusetts has a "nice system"
Despite all this, (including refusing to jump the bandwagon on Obamacare), he manages to secure the Republican primary shortly after Super Tuesday.
What is the most likely outcome out of this?
If you were a consultant to TTL Romney, how would you advise him to beat Obama?
If you were a DNC member, how would you advise the reelection campaign?
