Military coup in Britain, 1974

Was there really any truth behind this supposed planned coup against Harold Wilsons government or was it all just rumours ?

How would such a coup play out ? would the army play along or maybe split and begin infighting leading to a possible civil war or at the least a lot of bloodshed in and around Westminster and Whitehall and other parts of London ?

There are of course rumours, about the plan called "Operation Clockwork Orange", which would have seen Lord Mountbatten take over as leader. The only possible circumstances is another hung parliamnet at the October 1974 election, which Wilson scrapped into office with a majority of 3 seats. If the result had proved another with no party having a clear overall majority, then it is possible, but still very unlikely.

None. Except clucking tongues a little to well watered with liquor in the back-room of clubs. There's never been any substantial proof or evidence provided, just the wild interpretation of loose so called 'evidence' that's really grasping at straws to hold up a watertight argument.

Once 'I can't become Prime Minister' is done with, I may look into another narrative 1970s TL with this as the focus.

Ironically, if the military attempted this it would closer to communist revolution than any time since the depression.

There may be some condemnation and a lot of worry amongst NATO leaders if there is politcal instability in the UK, especially during the Cold War.

But if the new government was closer to the right, and far from political left, that would be welcomed i would imagine, at least by governments and military commanders in Europe and America.

It could look something like this
