Mid 80s and 90s presidential contenders?

It would also be far from impossible, Glenn was by and large a very good Senator, rather like McCain, he was a military-like figure who was popular with his own grassroots and respected by almost everyone. I'm not sure that he would have ever managed to gain the Presidency though, he never really had any ambitions in that area.
He ran in '76 for the VP slot, and 1984 for the Presidency (which put him in deep financial debt). I think he had some ambition.:D;)

Sam Nunn from about 1984 to 1992 (depending on how the Gulf and/or Cold War plays out)

Also Charles "Chuck" Robb from about 1988 to 1991 (the Miss Virginia scandal would derail his national viability after that point.)

Also Bill Clinton in 1988, he seriously considered running and in an ATL might actually do so.

Has anyone mentioned Dale Bumpers?

Robb would only have a chance in '88, but he'd probably lose to Bush. Bumpers would butterfly Clinton, since Clinton says in his memoirs he'd have supported Bumpers had he run at any time. I think all these people are too conservative for the Dems, since only 1988 is the last gasp of New Deal/Progressive ideological dominance in the Democratic Party before being replaced by the DLC. They've only had 2 Southern nominees since WWII- LBJ and Clinton. That hadn't been overcome by '88, though by then it was an ideological stigma rather than cultural bias.
