Michele Bachman had just been elected to the Minnesota State Senate in 2000. I doubt she was known outside of the state of Minnesota in 2000 making it very improbable that she would be a nominee for President for the Republican Party.
You need to give politicians time to develop political experience at the state level before they can seek national office.
