Mexico, part of the United States

What if Mexico had been annexed into the United States during Mexican War? We have to take these presupositions for granted:

1) México was far less populated. One of the main reasons which United States took on consideration was the huge amount of Mexican people. Let's say that instead of 7.5 million people who inhabited Mexico there are just 4.1. The US had 23 million at the time, so I bet the difference is quite noticeable. That would make easier the process of assimilation, nevertheless it wouldn't have been easy.

2) Manifest Destiny was far more popular than it really was. This would suppose that All-Mexico had a wider impact.

3) Nicholas Trist was not send to the US. Instead Polk sent someone more greedy about new lands.

My main question is: how many states would have came into consideration?, how would it look like today? and if it is feasible at some point to they won independence (as the Philippines) or instead they just get more integrated politically and economically?

For all the people interested on this thread:

In response to the last commentary, I have to say that I did this intentionally. I am interested on how Mexico would be TODAY as part of the United States, taking into consideration that it was annexed in the XIX Century. That's was all the historical reference. I welcome all of you.

Your "what if" has a POD pre-1900 though. I believe that's why Fenwick wrote "wrong forum".

Well yeah , I mean to know what goes on today, we need to kinda know what happened between 1840's and now.

This premise is a non-starter...

However, assuming it did happen, Mexico would have been split into several states, and would probably still be part of the U.S. today. Now, Mexico might be easier for the U.S. to annex if it somehow happened possibly decades earlier than is implied above. Nonetheless, orchestrating this would be difficult. Expect that the U.S. never enacts prohibition, and expect that Indians (Native Americans) are treated better, while people of African descent might fare worse. This TL's U.S. is a country where spicier foods are even more popular than today, and where oil is a major export.
