Mexico attacks the CSA

When the ACW started Mexico had debts to pay off. So WI for the simple fact that they need money Mexico asks the US to cover Mexican debt, and in return they get military assistance?

You mean before the French invaded?

I suspect the USA would be concerned that Mexico was using this as an excuse to recover territories lost in the Mexican-American War and want nothing to do with the idea.

Which doesn't mean you can't have a war between Mexico and the CSA. In OTL, there were diplomatic attempts by the CSA to acquire Baja California, Sonora, Chihuahua, and Nuevo Leon. If those were more bungled than in OTL, Mexico might have declared war on the CSA, giving Kirby Smith and his men something to do.

Then there's the possibilities once the French take over Mexico. Even without trying to annex everything that used to be Mexican territory, they could resurrect the claim that the Nueces, not the Rio Grande should be their border with Texas.

I once saw a western, I can't remember the name of the movie, about a fort in far western Texas, circa 1863, where a small contingent of French soldiers crossed the border and came to this fort in CSA territory that was under siege from Indians [Apaches or Comanches, I can't remember which] and the two groups fought together against the Indians. The CSA commander was an asshole and the French officer took temporary command of the fort with the approval of the leading CSA noncom. So it was like 'as one white man to another, we have to hang together to fight the red savage' and of course, they won, then at the end, the French re-crossed the Rio Grande.
