In this discussion, consider that the Conservatives have won the mexican civil war of 1857-1861 (Guerra de reforma).
The conservative government decides then to restore the Empire.
Who would be the new emperor?

EDIT: I've just seen a writing error in the poll.
If you think to an other candiate, explain who and why (no precise, an error of translation), as for all choice.

It would be Maximilian as he was already Emperor during the war.

Also the conservative government wouldn't last that long. Most likely by the 1880s another revlot under Diaz or other liberals would occurr.

The most important here, before calling in any foreign prince to rule as Emperor of Mexico, is to get rid of Juárez and the rest of the radical liberals by whatever means necessary; the moderates were more willing to make concessions than the radicals. After that, I doubt anyone would lift a finger unless there's a succession crisis.

Anyway, I think it would be Maximiliano. And after he passes away, if it is without issue, the throne would end up to Agustín de Iturbide's eldest grandson (whose name I keep on forgetting).

There is a mistake. The Reform War is not the French intervention in Mexico which took place between 1861 and 1867.
The Reform War is a civil war which lasted from early 1858 to late 1860. After the revolt which overthrew Santa Anna in 1855, the country found again itself divided between the centralist Conservadores and the federalist Liberales. A liberal consitution was adopted in late 1857, angering the Conservadores who led a coup in December. However, if the capital fell to the Conservadores, the other states declared quickly their support to the Liberales led by Juarez. The Liberales retook the capital in late 1860.
Thereafter, the Conservadores managed to gain support from France to reconquer power.
Maximilian was maybe imposed by Napoleon III but the idea of a restoration had already been considered by the Conservadores.

I would want to know who they would chose if they hadn't been under pressure from Napoleon III, defeating themselves the Liberales.

A reason advanced by the Conservatives to explain the failure of the Ist Empire is the inexperience of Agustin Ist. An european monarch seems thus a logical choice.
Two european candidates could be considered:
> Archduke Maximilian, member of the greatest royal house of Europe, the very catholic Habsburgs; however, his liberalism can be a problem;
> Prince Leopold, a catholic german, useful to a country which would seek to have connections with powerful industrialists.

Of course, prince Agustin, as heir of Agustin Ist, is to not be excluded from a possible candidature. But would he be strong enough to govern according to the conservative ideas (a centralized state where the Emperor is the holder of all powers)?
