I don't think there were electric guitars until the 1950s.

Not that they couldn't be invented earlier.

And if there was a time metal could be invented earlier, the 1920s seems about right. You just had a gruesome and bloody world war, fascism taking root in post-war Europe, HP Lovecraft is still writing, you have movies like Metropolis around to influence metal imagery...

Another problem is, alot of what we think of as heavy metal is taken from punk. Metallica, etc. took alot from bands like GBH, Discharge, the Misfits, Black Flag.

You'll basically need earlier electric guitars, and an earlier rebellious youth culture, which, the 1920s being the time of bomb throwing anarchists, flappers, the Red Scare, the communist revolutions and fascist coups in Europe, is probably a great time to have it.

Since a lot of OTL metal is very dated as it is, you should probably think of the some fictional metal bands.

You'd need a lot more than just the electric guitar. The power chord wasn't even invented until the 1950's, and you obviously need massive developments in rock before you can get to metal.

Without altering history beyond recognition (especially musical history), thanks to the changes in technology and culture that you'd need, I can't see this as being plausible at all.

To directly answer the question of how "it would be like," I think the best answer is unrecognizable.

I also don't see the youth culture of the 1920's connecting with Judas Priest or Iron Maiden, let alone Venom or Hellhammer.

Thread should be exiled to the ASB forum for being so ridiculously Alien Space Bat. Ridiculously awesome alien spacebats, to be sure.

That's such an interesting thought, death metal being played on a phonograph. I have a better idea: emo music in the 1920s. Instead of becoming dictator of Germany, Adolf Hitler forms Sterbende Risse. :D

As others have said, it may be possible, but the POD would probably have to be very early to get metal in the '20s. In addition to a vast degree of librelization and youth rebellion, you need the technological advances, etc Remember that in most of the world, homosexuality was criminal in the '20s.

IIRC the first electric guitar was created in the thirties ( 32, Rickenbacker ) so you need a pod that someone creates first ( at the end of WWI or probably before ) and ...

Still I think that Metal is too "Heavy" ( pun intended ) for those times ...

In the 1920s they had their own rebellious music. In fact modern day metal has roots in Blues. So transplanting Metal into the 1920s is like sending you back to replace your grandfather. I mean, there's an evolution here, without the inbetween years of evolution Metal won't actually have a leg to stand on.

1920s emo? As an old school punk who basically quit the subculture because he was tired of pretty boys with emo mops cock blocking him and people thinking Saves the Day and Thursday are punk bands and the only punk bands, no. A thousand times no. Some of the names would be funny. The Get Up Lads. The Free City of Danzig is the Reason. Sunny Day Leninist Collective Farm.
