Thruout the yrs, including esp the most recent case with the South African mercs arrested in Equatorial Guinea, and Bob Denard's shenanigans in the Comoros in the late 1970s, there've been a few significant cases of mercenary operations which were compromised, discovered or otherwise never implemented, which raise interesting WIs.
1985/86- Chambers and Barlow- 2 Aussie tourists arrested for drug-trafficking in Malaysia and eventually sentenced to death and hanged- apparently, the (American) girlfriend of 1 of these guys intended to fund some sorta rescue mission to bust em out of jail, which failed since her father didn't intend to provide funds for such an endeavour
1992/93- Colombia- 1 British SAS vet merc whose name was in the paper just a couple wks back was contracted to assassinate Pablo Escobar using an A37 Dragonfly attack plane, but this never eventuated due to difficulties in procuring the relevant ordnance etc
1994- kidnapping and murder of Australian David Wilson and 2 other Western tourists in Cambodia by rogue Khmer Rouge fighters- his family apparently also considered hiring mercs to locate and rescue him
1997- PNG and Sandline Affair- Sir Julius Chan's govt attempted to hire some 300 ex-SADF mercs- including the use of a couple ex-Soviet Mi-17 Hip choppers- to quash the longrunning Bougainville insurgency, which triggered a mutiny by the PNG Defence Force and the fall of the Chan govt
Any thoughts on how each of these mercenary-related situations could've gone differently ?
