i already am working with my own data, i think OSM no labels works best.I just found this map:

It's an OSM variant that is only supposed to map europe, HOWEVER they mapped the rest of the world (including international borders) and everything besides europe has no labels, just coastline and international borders. it also matches up with the tiles we've been using so far. This will make for the cleanest base tiles!
Does it look good to you? it has no lakes but I'd just draw the coastline with it
