MegaTsunami

Suppose the 1949 eruption of Cumbre Vieja in the Canaries caused a megatsunami. What would be the results and how would the world be today?

The west coast of Europe and Africa would not be in great shape, either.
What else would happen? Would we lose the Cold War, for example?

West coast America

There would also be a mini tidal wave thru the straights into the Mediterian affecting North west Africa, but it would die down by the eastern med.

a Two hundred foot wave would roll across Florida collasping back down in the Gulf, scrash New Orleans, Galavaston, Vera Cruz, and Havana.

Bermuda, Bahamas Lesser Antiles, Barren rocks, east coastal cites from Miami to st johns devistated. the US would have to rebuild from the West Coast.

Whats left of England wouldn't have time to deal with north ireland, Erie sends some troops in to restore order- as across all of Ireland, and they never leave after. How big the secondary wave in the north sea determines the outcome of Holland.

One wave goes up the Davis straight coving Baffin Island and the west coast of Greenland as it retreats after, it pulls major amounts of Ice with it.
a second wave goes up the Norwegian sea crashing into the arctic cap and bouncing it's way around Siberia [russia will have its own problems]

A southern wave Crashes into the Wendall Sea Pulling even more Ice back with it. Not only will the world have to deal with the waves damage, but also with a mini ice age triggered by all this melting ice.

The destruction would probably be less than expected, but it would be bad. All of the major US ports would be destroyed, wiping out much of the US Atlantic Fleet (at least the ships caught in port). The US would have to focus on rebuilding the East Coast, which would reduce/eliminate aid to Europe.

Check out http://www.eurekalert.org/pub_releases/2001-08/ucl-mtd082301.php for a brief discussion on a modern megatsunami from Cumbre Vieja (note that the idea of 50 "kilometre" high waves is probably a typo).
