Medvedev fires Putin

In March 2011, Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin publicly criticized (his nominal boss) President Dmitry Medvedev for authorizing a NATO intervention in Libya at the UN Security Council. He said that the resolution resembled "medieval calls for crusades". Medvedev hit back by saying Putin's comments were "unacceptable". (source: https://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-12810566)

My question is as follows. What if Medvedev had promptly fired Putin from his post for upstaging him (and naming someone more pliable as the new PM)? Could he get himself nominated by the United Russia party for the 2012 elections and win them?

BBC news - "Dmitry Medvedev, President of Russia has been killed in a car crash. President Medevdev was leaving the Kremlin when his car was struck by a drunk driver who was driving a truck. Although there were medics on the scene in his convoy, he was dead by the time they were able to open the car doors."

Or something like that. And this happens before Putin's officially removed from office, so the sad faced Prime Minister can step into the role left by the President following this deeply tragic accident.

Of course, "accidents" sometimes happen, but let's say Putin's removal takes effect immediately, so he doesn't have time to plan any "unfortunate events". Is there any way Medvedev can retain power, or does Putin still manage to erode his position from behind the scenes?

Putin has ties to the big oligarchs of Russia - I expect Medvedev kills himself with three bullets to the head after the media and donors support Putin's new party or his bid to retake power in United Russia. Unless Medvedev can really quickly position himself as even more pro-business and Putin can't offer a better deal, he won't last.

Medvedev was Putin's little puppet, let into the position of President only because the Russian Constitution forbade him from sitting again. As others have stated, expect Dmitri to have a little "accident".
