Medieval America Mark III

I remember Brazil being a maritime empire similar to the United States actually. Plus as per Matthew White's own theories on feudal forest regions, it's seems like he would have made Brazil a divided region like India or eastern America.
Though it was at times divided into multiple kingdoms, there was also plenty of empires as well, more or less uniting the region. That said, once the Amazon takes over again, it might become like the regions in South East Asia that had collapsed kingdoms that where over ran by the jungle, giving way to a more tribal society again.

What about the Catholic Church in the region

I kinda want to make a spinoff based on https://www.amazon.com/Standing-Final-Watch-Last-Brigade-ebook/dp/B01HSCAJM6 but set in this TL. Here it is, let me know if this is good enough.

Operation Continuity

Operation Continuity is a classified operation by the secretive Bureau of American Survival (later the Department of Preservation) in conjunction with the National Survival Council, the remnant successor of the remainder of the National Command Authority. The operation is intended to preserve whatever remains of American society and civilization after the world started to regress back to the old ages and descended into chaos.

The operation started sometime in the early 2000s as a failsafe operation by President Bush as a result of 9/11. America came under attack left and right, and so it's existence was threatened. The operation was initially managed by the Department of Defense. In the late 2010s, the effects of the regression began to be felt. The President of the United States, after consulting of what remained of the scientific community, created the executive Bureau of American Survival and tasked the new executive bureau of organizing and planning Operation Continuity. The first bureau director. Neil deGrasse Tyson with his staff set upon on planning the survival of the United States, or whatever was left of it anyways. Tyson planned for three stages for this Operation. The first stage involved the gathering of essential people and assets and was tasked with recruiting the top 10 percent of the remaining scientific community. The second stage was the long stage and the most important stage of the operation. It primarily focused on constructing the bunkers and storage locations intended for Operation Continuity. After that, these essential people(s) were to be frozen and put in cryosleep preservation chambers called Cryogenic Life Support Chambers for 900 years or were manually activated. The third stage was when Operation Continuity was activated and set upon the task of rebuilding American civilization.

Operation Continuity was spread throughout the continental United States (CONUS) by a series of deep subterranean bunkers. There were 8 bunkers overall. 7 of these bunkers were supporting bunkers, meant to be outposts. The main bunker codenamed ''Columbia'' was located in the Sierra Estrella Mountain Range in Arizona. The bunker complex spanned 43 kilometers in space and 890 feet in height. It took a herculean mining effort by the Army Corps of Engineers and a large ton of explosives to construct the complex. The bunker has multiple floors (called levels) and has provisions such as storage space for 52 UH-60 helicopters, 12 CH-47F heavy-lift helicopters, 8 CH-53E Super Stallions, a squadron of AH-64 Apache Longbows, a separate 12-aircraft squadron of F35 Lightning IIs, and various UAVs. It also has storage space for various vehicles such as JLTVs, MRAPs, HMMWVs, MTLVs, etc. The bunker has a receding but covered heliport intruding into the mountain range side. The large bunker is powered by a dual of land-based A4W nuclear reactors, installed on nuclear-powered aircraft carriers of the US Navy. It generates about 100 megawatts in all and can operate for 30 years at full maximum before being taken off for heavy maintenance and replacing of fuel rods. The bunker has a 4-kilometer deep water chamber intended for drinking and multipurpose use. Most of the space inside the bunker are large-spaced rooms for the cryogenic life support chambers, with each life support room housing around 500 people. Throughout the bunker are multipurpose function chambers, intended to be used as housing, armories, storage areas, habitable farming pods. ''Columbia'' is divided into two sections, the essential section (housing people, blueprints, food, etc.) and the forward utility section (the nuclear reactors, vehicles, and engineering equipment). The two sections are connected by a series of underground concrete-paved roads, and two tram lines intended for personnel use. The bunker has 12200 personnel in all, with 30 personnel intended to be watch officers, checking the bunker at all times; at a given period of time. Watch Shifts usually last for two years then going back to a state of cryosleep (Deep Sleep).
The very majority of the personnel are military, while so about 3000 staff are scientists, advisors, utility and engineering personnel, and various experts on several matters. Among the 3000 designated staff, are liaisons and advisors from the various executive departments (DoD, DoJ, DoE, etc). When the operation is activated, protocol and presidential directive would make the United States Secretary of Preservation (Tyson), currently under deep sleep; be Acting President under the 25th Amendment.

At last, at the dawn of the 31st Century. Operation Continuity is activated. Will they meet their objective in medieval America?

Please feel free to put in criticism or suggestion. This is just a premise. If this is good enough by you guys. I'll expand it and make my own thread.
This should be made into canon flash man

What about the Catholic Church in the region
Catholicism already has local religious customs throughout Latin America (just about everywhere, really), with no communication with the pope, and more localization in general, those local customs are only going to get a stronger hold on Catholicism. This would likely give more variety of Catholics, with those in urban areas most likely staying closer to mainstream Catholicism, and rural areas being more region based, maybe even readapting more pagan traditions depending on how many tribal people are in the area.

Admiralty of Baranoff

  • System of Government: Maritime Aristocracy
  • Head of State: Admiral, selected from the descendants of the Steinman family by the Great Captains
  • Population: 30,000
  • Religion: Laskan Orthodoxy
  • Totemic Symbol: Pacific Octopus
When the tribes and chiefdoms of Laska coalesced together during the mini ice age of the 2300s, it was under the rule of three warlords: the Governor of Juneau, the Mayor of Anchorage, and the Admiral of Baranoff. The Governor was to be the first among equals and spiritual mediator, the Mayor to be the master of all land-based combat, but it was the Admiral of Sitka Island that was to be master over the grand fleet as it struck all the way down to the warring states of California.

Over time the tradition of the great raids has subsided, leaving the old political arrangement queer and outdated. Isolated Juneau grows increasingly irrelevant, overshadowed by Ankrage and her new President. The upstart Ketchikan has finally broken the lie of the "Three Rulers, One State" system, quickly rising to heights of power with their alien religion. The lie is no less exposed in the Admiralty - no longer grandiose in well-tailored uniforms, the Admiral and his Grand Captains are a rag-tag mix of fishmongers and pirates.

The Admiralty's lands cling to the outer edges of the Alzander Archipelago. From here, they control a few vital straits and passage ways from which they exact tribute and booty. Meanwhile, trawling fleets brave the dark and stormy waters of the northern pacific to bring in rich hauls. Most famously, the men of Baranoff are accomplished whalers. Today, it is by far the weakest of the four main powers of Laska. It does have by far the best understanding of ship building, and they are the only sailors that are able to reliably brave the outer passage of the dark sea.

The State of Delaware

delaware.png

System of Government: Gubernatorial Dynastic Monarchy

Head of State: Irenee DuPont XVI

Population: 990,000

Religion: Non-Denominational Church

The State of Delaware was the "first state" of the Old Union, but it is a relative backwater in the new dark ages. It is a small territory, squashed between the influence of the vestigial American empire in Washington DC and its boisterous neighbor, Novio Giorsi. As the Regression set in, and looting and violent anarchy consumed the land and industrial society collapsed, George Washington II installed the ancient patrician DuPont family as dynastic hereditary governors to maintain American influence. This made sense in theory since the DuPont company had dominated Delaware for centuries, but in practice, was problematic. The DuPont influence came from plastics and gunpowder manufacturing, two products that were in short enough supply people would kill for them then and no longer available now. Second, the DuPont family had a longstanding tradition of inbreeding to maintain "purity of soul and blood". So in practice, most DuPont governors were insane and inbred impoverished patricians, who spent most of their money hiring alchemists to try to recreate plastics and gunpowder and not succeeding without the infrastructure, factories and expertise to do so. Often, famine came upon the state as the DuPonts seized the harvests of Kent County farms to pay off alchemists, try to gain influence in Washington or pay protection money to fend off raids from the Don of Atlantic City Giovanni Scarfo IX.

Indeed, Novio Giorsi was a bigger problem at times than the Hapsburgesque DuPonts. Across the sea from Lewes was the local caporegime barony of Don Giovanni Scarfa, descendent of powerful pre-Regression Atlantic City mob moss Nicky Scarfo. His racket held Cape May, Ocean City, and Cherry Hill and made him wealthy and insular, distant from the Commission government in Hoboken. Looking to increase his power without antagonizing other Dons and capos, he began raiding Dover, Lewes and Rehoboth Beach and Bethany Beach, extorting protection in grain, women and gold and silver from the poorly defended Delaware shore. The DuPonts asked for help from Washington, both only occasionally could the Joint Chiefs send knights or ships due to unrest and intrigue in the District of Columbia. When some farmers in Slower Lower Delaware resisted protection, Scarfo's soldiers razed many villages and slaughtered many people. The land was so depopulated Pierre Samuel DuPont XVIII had to invite Amish farmers from Pennsylvania to work the land after a famine that year from the burnt harvest. The DuPonts moved from their ancestral Brandywine Chataeu to a regression era mall fortress in Christiana to safety. Eventually the vestigial empire in Washington began to be more assertive over Novio Giorsi and more forces were sent to defend Delaware which didn't stop the raid but made the smaller and less frequent and destructive. Though the events lead to a large Amish farmer population in Southern Delaware which remains.

Delawarean here, can confirm this all sounds on-point! Amazing work!

Of course, as someone also in Slower Lower Delaware, what's the difference between the Amish and level of development now? :p

Somebody went over that...I think...I figure their ability to grow food without modern technology and pacifism made them sought for protection as good peasants by Pennsylvanian rulers and in Ohio, Indiana, etc. in the Regression. Pacifism in a time of anarchy, then a new medieval age would not be a winning survival strategy so they'd need local rulers protecting them, but for a medieval ruler, they make ideal peasants.
