Mediatized Houses: equal or morganatic marriage partners?

Just something I was wondering about. In theory, as formerly reigning dynasties, Mediatized houses should be considered equal to their reigning counterparts, but is this right in practice? For instance, Archduchess Elisabeth Marie, granddaughter of Emperor Franz Josef, married Mediatized Prince Otto von Windischgratz, but it was considered a morganatic match. At the same time, Wilhelm II married Princess Augusta Victoria of Schleswig-Holstein, who's family might as well have been a Mediatized house, considering that the twin Duchies had been annexed by Prussia, but she was considered an equal match. So which was it for Mediatized houses: equal or morganatic? Or did it very from dynasty to dynasty?

I think that it depended on when the House was mediatized, and the arrangements made then. For example I'm sure I've read somewhere (maybe just on Wikipedia, though...) that all of the Napoleonic-era mediatizations recognised by the Congress of Vienna were treated as leaving the dynasties concerned "princely" enough for equal marriages.

Mediatization usually refers to the former reigining german states - most of which were either abolished and merged with larger more powerful neighbours.
In those cases the former reigning families were treated as equal for marital purposes.

For those states which required "equal" marriage - the term reigning or formerly reigning was often used.

Outside Germany there aren't many examples of formerly reigning families subsumed by a larger neighbour.

Outside of Germany I am only aware of Khans of Qasim and Khans of Siberia in Russia. Both got to be "mediatized Princes" in Tsardom of Russia, with special distinction of their status being that their males were allowed to have the styling Tsarevich and not Prince.
Khans of Qasim died out in male line in 1715 OTL, Tsarevichs of Siberia survived into 19th century but brought down to mere Princes from mediatized Princes (Princes of Siberia) in 1718 due to the head of the House being supporter of Tsarevich Alexei.

Your right. I've never seen the formerly reigning Italian dynasties referred to as mediatized. In fact it seems to be fairly exclusive to the former states of the Holy Roman Empire. The only other example I've found is the Joseon dynasty of Korea, who were mediatized as Kings by Japan.
