McKinley lives - Most likely president 1905?

What if McKinley lives to finish his term?

Who would be the most likely Republican Nominee for the Presidency in 1904, and why?

Who would win the general election after 8 years of McKinley?

TR, most likely, wins the nomination. But he probably wouldn't have McKinley's support, so perhaps Joe Cannon or somebody defeats him for the nomination(though I doubt it).

Ironically, in such timelines TR isn't a shoe-in, but I still think he's a good choice. I can see him arising as a compromise during the convention.

Actually, looking at the McKinley cabinet, he's the only one who was a Governor previously.

TR was not popular with the party bosses, they put him in as VP because it had no actual power (and they hoped it would be a dead end for him).

Not precisely. He had some enemies within the New York political machines.

However, they weren't enough to keep him out of the Governorship of New York in the first place.

Their ability to keep him out of the presidency would be even less. And in fact, they might even support him, if for no other reason than to CONTINUE to keep him out of New York politics.

Here is another question

What happens if Hobart lives and either takes over on Mckinley's death or continues as VP he had McKinley support would he have been the Republican nominee in 05?

I happen to like the Democratic Party member that TR ran against as a president, and not running against TR's record as president I think he'd have more than a chance.

Parker was a Judge who had never held executive office.

Quite frankly, one gets the impression that he was thrown to the lions when he was nominated to take on TR.

I first question whether in a non-incumbent election whether he'd be nominated. I can see William Jennings Bryan making his third bid here instead of '08.

Second, if nominated, I think he will get trounced by TR. He's a former Governor, and governors do well traditionally in presidential elections. Not to mention that TR knows how to campaign.
