McGovern '92

I was reading on Wiki that George McGovern publicly wanted to run for president in 1992, but he didn't, because of "family reasons." He said that if he ran, he would be "in to win," not just to "influence" the Democratic debate.

So, what would be the effects of a McGovern presidential campaign in 1992? I wouldn't entirely rule out a McGovern nomination. After all, there were several Democratic leaders in 1991 who believed the Dems had no chance of victory in 1992, so they probably would be alright with offering McGovern as a sacrificial lamb (again). But even then, it would be hard for McGovern to be nominated.

But let's take that direction now: What would the presidential campaign look like with Bush vs. McGovern? I won't post a map, but I will say that I can't see McGovern winning very many states (if any at all). It's safe to say, IMO, that he would lose in a landslide.

But how would this effect American politics post-92? Would McGovern be more involved in political activism afterward, and could he possibly seek a public office afterward? IDK, just throwing that out there. IMO, it would be really cool to see Senator McGovern in the '90s and 2000s, though I'm sure it's near-ASB.

If McGovern wins the nomination, Bush wins easily. McGovern seems like a nice enough person, but his reputation and image had been created in 1972. Hell, such a situation might lead to a Perot Presidency of all things if Bush is still incredibly unpopular.

That is firmly within the realm of ASB territory. It reminds me of Carter reportedly demanding a rematch against Reagan in '84. Bush wins in a landslide with 400+ EV. The closest modern equivalent would be Obama v. Palin '12. McGovern would be older than Bush, and he got trounced in his last Senate race in '80. By then SD is a safe Red state, so he'd lose even worse if he tried for the Senate or governorship.

McGovern running for the nomination isn't completely ASB, didn't he run in 84'? I mean, he'd be crushed in the primaries, but if he truly wanted to mount a campaign there's no reason why he couldn't have staged a repeat of his 1984' campaign.

Where would the money, organization, support come from? Jerry Brown and Tsongas get the vote McGovern would've, and Clinton clinches the nomination even earlier than OTL. McGovern could certainly run, but he'd do as well as Ron Paul did in 2008.
