McClellan dies January 1862

Suppose McClellan is killed or otherwise dies in January 1862, who should replace him, who does, and how does this affect the war?

I think next to Lee McClellan "helped" the Rebels more than any other general in the war.

Scott is in Paris, so he's not coming back:

My own choice for general-in-chief in this period is Joseph King Fenno Mansfield, with Edwin Vose Sumner as commanding general of the Army/Department of the Potomac, ideally with Humphreys as chief of staff of the AotP.

Dark horses for are GinC Wool, Hitchcock, and/or Halleck; for CG are Buell, Rosecrans, and/or McDowell.

It definitely has an impact; basically the Overland Campaign or something like it ends up being fought in 1862-63, rather than 1864-65.

Which could mean Richmond falls in 1863, roughly the same time as Vicksburg.

Best,
