McCarthy in '68?

I'm currently doing some research and am interested in doing a timeline of my own. I wanted to throw out the basic premise of it and get some feedback from the fine folks here. I want to see if the idea would be considered viable or simply ASB.

Basically everything chugs along a la OTL with the POD being RFK decides to stay out of the race. LBJ still withdraws due to health concerns. With some backing from RFK, McCarthy moves towards the nomination.

Your thoughts?

Thanks.

One number you need to remember: 75%. That is the percentage of delegates controlled by the bosses, of which Hizzonor is primus inter pares. McCarthy's nomination is ASB. RFK would not back McCarthy for a multitude of reasons: they loathed one another, were leaders of opposite wings of the Democratic Party, and also that if staying out RFK would be trying to maintain the bosses' goodwill for '76 ('72 is a kamikaze mission for any Dem) and would not try to piss them off at that point.

It would be tough for McCarthy to win. Even RFK if he had lived would have been in tough situatuion in the delegate count. HHH was in very good shape. Getting RFK to help is a key. If you get RFK you might get Daley. But RFK and McCarthy did not like one another. But McCarthy did get along with EMK. You got to get LBJ to see that HHH is a sure loser. How you get Johnson to help McCarthy is really tough.

Daley is not going to back anyone against LBJ himself, and blocking a McCarthy nomination is easy. If Humphrey enters the primaries he can win most of them except California, Mass and New Hampshire. McCarthy can't touch WWC voters to save his life, HHH locks up the blacks and Hispanics that went to RFK IOTL.
