May 1958 crisis in France without De Gaulle

So lets assume that De Gaulle has a deadly car accident in 1956 or 1957. He is able to write his war memoirs and has enough time to communicate his political ideas but he isn't available as a unifying political figure when the Algerian crisis is threatening the weak Fourth Republic.

What would be the consequences?

When I raised this question on another forum, a friend of mine wrote: "if De Gaulle is dead from 1956 is there a May 58 crisis? Yes the 4th republic is in serious internal trouble, fire-breathers like Lagaillarde and opportunists like Salan are still around but the likes of Soustelle, Massu and co were acting to bring De Gaulle back not for Salan to play Napoleon....

If you know french, there was a radio show on De Gaulle intervention during the May 58 crisis recently. What I understand from this is that without De Gaulle, the crisis will be completly different, as many people supporting De Gaulle directed that crisis in such a way to enable De Gaulle to take power.
In many way, what paved the way for De Gaulle was his press conference, and without it, the army won't be able to conduct itself as it did. Paratroopers taking Corsica? If they have no one to give power to? It may very well lead to every part of the society allying themselves and go for a "Union Sacré" against a coup (yet without communists, as they were not trusted).

But would the military just swallow abandoning Algeria?

I mean the problems leading to the crisis are still there. There has to be some reaction/solution.
