Maximum spread of Mormonism?

Obviously this is a difficult question to answer, and it would be easy to say "send out more missionaries". So I'll just ask:

1 - Do you think that if Joseph Smith had not been shot, and had instead died at an old age, that Mormonism would be more or less widespread than today? Bear in mind the fact that he was working on a translation of the Bible at the time of his death. The completed Joseph Smith Bible would probably have differentiated Mormonism from mainstream Christianity even more than in OTL, and might put off potential converts. But then there wouldn't have been the splitting into LDS and other minor groups, as happened following Smith's death.

And a seperate scenario:

2 - Do you think that Mormonism would be more or less widespread in the following scenario: Joseph Smith and his followers never practice or endorse polygamy. On the one hand, they would have been persecuted much less and Joseph Smith might not have been murdered, but on the other hand, perhaps they would not have been able to breed so rapidly as they did due to the practice of polygamy, so it would be less widespread?
