Maximilian's legacy: Interwar and Post World War 2

Iirc, the OTL Argentina during WW2 period is actually a well developed nation. The Argentine Navy main force in WW2 would be two dreadnought battleships built by USA, 5 armored cruisers built by Italy, 3 modern light cruisers and 14 destroyers and 22 torpedo boats built by the British as well as a small number of locally built coastal defense ships and minesweepers.

The Battleships ARA Rivadavia and the Armored Cruiser ARA Garibaldi

Although Argentina might not fighting alone as it just gained Brazil as its new satellite state so the combined strength of Chile, Argentina and Brazil will definitely caused the Mexicans some headaches.

The Argentine-Brazil and Chile combined fleet would have 6 battleships in total to give them more chance fighting the Mexican Gulf Fleet, however the only the Rivadavia, Moreno and Almirante Latorre are on par with the Mexican ships as they are proper super dreadnoughts whereas Brazillian Minas Geraes class were wholefully outdated by this period and the Rio de Jainero is simply lacking both armor and firepower to be able to effectively countering the Mexican Monasterio class fast battleships with 380mm guns.

Argentinian Army actually has their own locally produced tanks in WW2 as well, as i mentioned earlier, the Nahuel D.L.43 medium tank is one of those, it actually got produced in small numbers OTL (about 12 units) and is basically their own Sherman equivalent.

Aside from that, Argentina also has a few dozens Vickers M1934 light tanks armed with 7.7mm machine guns.

It's a good thing that will be a entente between Mexico, US, and UK. Possibly even the underdog Paraguay.

For Chilean Navy if they ever join the war, the Chilean Fleet ITTL has their superdreadnought Almirante Latorre as its flagship, the O'Higgins armored cruiser, Protected cruisers Esmeralda, Chacalbuco and two Destroyers Hyatt and Aldea, three Capitan O'Brien class submarines and six more submarines Fresia, Guacolda, Guale, Quidora, Rucumilla and Tegualda.

qzyifi1bm3301.jpg OHiggins-1898.jpg
For Brazillian Republican Navy, this is the composition of their fleet, three battleships, two Minas Geraes class Minas Geraes and Sao Paolo and the unique 14 guns Rio de Jainero. Other units include two Bahia class light cruisers ten Para class destroyers and three Marcilio Dias destroyers, as well as the Humayta submarine bought from Italy.

The Rio de Jainero ITTL was confisticated by the British before WW1 due to Brazil pro-Central Powers stance and renamed as HMS Agincourt, the ship was later given back to Brazil from Britain to comply with the surrender terms after the Great War. This ship is their most powerful dreadnought available, but its protection is inadequate and its guns while numerous are obsolete and lacking in range against the more powerful 15 inch battleships of the Mexican Gulf Fleet.

On the Army sides, Chile armored force only has 20 Carden Loyd Mk. VI tankettes, Brazil meanwhile has 23 Carro Veloce L3/38 tankettes built by Italy with 18 armed with twin Madsen MGs and 5 armed with a 13.2mm Hotchkiss machine gun. Brazil also has 12 Renault FT light tanks, 5 armed with MGs and 6 armed with 37mm guns and one unarmed radio tank.

Japan was bitter after it's humiliation in the aftermath of the Treaty of Berlin and they soon realized that it's greatest rival was: Mexico for the following reasons:
  1. Mexico had more bigger and valuable colonies such as Raj and Indochina.
  2. Mexico had the Pacific fleet in Cam Ranh Bay in Indochina including: 5 Battleships, 5 Aircraft carriers, 30 armoured cruisers, and 10 submarines posing a threat for Japanese Formosa.
  3. Mexico was supporting the Beiyang government in Manchuria against the Japanese supported Kuomintang.
In the Twenties, the two superpowers engaged in the Pacific Naval Race and it would last until 1929 draining both powers of their coffers, however Mexico could take the financial hit because of it's colonial holdings in South Africa, Rhodesia, The Raj, Jamaica, and Indochina they could easily refill the finances with their valuable resources. Japan, on the other hand, was bankrupt and literally had to suck everything out of Formosa, Korea, and every island colony they seized from the Central Powers in WW1. The results was a growing unemployment and more nationalistic army. The Japanese Parliament tried to stabilized the situation by cutting back on military and Navy, the results were what you expected: a coup happened with General Hideki Tojo as it's leader overthrowing government in March 12, 1931, making himself Prime Minister and immediately set Japan's course so imperialistic, that even the Great Powers were shocked on how Japan was becoming completely militaristic.

220px-HidekiTojoColor.jpg Prime Minister Hideki Tojo

The first conquest did was the invasion of Manchuria in 19 of September 1931 however the Beiyang army put up a hellish resistance and with the help of Mexican officers they managed to stop the invasion at Mukden in the 30 of September and rapidly the Japanese advantage they had was lost and brutal fighting took place becoming the world's first instance of fighting since the end of the Weltkrieg. By 14 of October the IJN was kicked out of Mukden.

Japanese_troops_entering_Tsitsihar.jpg Japanese troops evacuating from Mukden

After the embarrassment in Mukden Tojo blamed the Mexicans for the defeat, while he was partly correct he made the hypocritical accusation of Mexican violating the Buenos Aires agreement by supporting the Beiyang government even though the Japanese were also breaking the agreement by not only supporting the Kuomintang but also antagonizing Mexican and German Asian colonies by supporting Independence movements in the Raj, in Indochina, and by supporting Siam with arming them against Mexican colonial authority.

images (6).jpeg Siamese propaganda against the Beiyang government.

This brought Mexican Japanese relations to the lowest point but Japan didn't declare war yet and instead turned their sights South: the Dutch East Indies. After three months of preparation the Japanese quickly invaded on January 5, 1932 without declaration and the Dutch were powerless after the disastrous defeat at the Battle of Java Sea losing 2 light cruisers and 3 destroyers, thus making the Dutch unable to stop the Japanese. The only thing they could do was ask Germany or Mexico for help, both declined and instead let Japan do as they pleased, that would bite them in the ass later on.

300px-Dutch_cruiser_Java_under_Japanese_attack_in_February_1942.jpg Battle of Java Sea

After conquering Indonesia, Tojo set his sights towards the Soviet Union and invaded the rest of Sakhalin island and plans were even drawn up to invade Vladivostok, until the Soviet Japanese Neutrality pact was signed in April 13 1934 making both neutral in the case of war against either Germany or Mexico and when the Second Weltkrieg erupted Japan immediately took advantage and declared war on both Mexico and the Beiyang government.

For Imperial Mexican Army Air Corps locally produced fighters, here are some good candidates

First up is the imported Polish PZL gull winged fighters by Zygmund Pulawsky the PZL-11 which was armed with 4x7.7mm Browning 1919 MGs and the PZL.24 with fully enclosed cockpit and 8mm armored seat armed with 4x7.7mm Brownings or 2x7.7mm+2x20mm Swiss Oerlikon autocannons. In the OTL these planes were used by Greece and Romanian Air Force in WW2.
Polish P.11 and P.24

Both planes while relativel modern in the early 1930s were quickly becoming obsolete and outclassed against the newer Japanese Zeroes, Italian G.50 and Macchi C.200 by the time the war broke out.

Which is why Mexico would have to look for more modern planes, the last option for the early war Mexican monoplane fighters would be the Dutch Fokker D XXI, this plane has similar armament like the PZL P.24, but was more modern and much more rugged, armed with 4x7.7mm Browning MGs, the most distinct trait of this design is its fixed undercarriages.

In the OTL, this plane was widely used by Royal Netherlands Air Force, Finnish Air Force, OTL Spain actually had one of these plane and several locally built incomplete airframes by the time the Civil War broke out.

For early Naval fighters, the Imperial Mexican Naval Air Corps would have to rely on the antiquated Gloster Sea Gladiator which they bought/license built from the British Commonwealth as this is their most modern fighter available for their Carriers.

Although later on, they could also get the imported/locally built F4F Wildcat from their friendly US ally, the Mexican Government with more fundings for their Navy would have ordered a batch of ~100-200 Wildcats for their Carrier fleet.

The Mexican variant would be basically more similar to the prototype XF4F-2 than the larger Wildcat variants used by the Commonwealth and US Navy, its much shorter, had more rounded tail and wingtips, its still use a telescopic sight and has only two .50 cal mounted in the fuselage synchronized and no wing armaments unlike regular wing-mounted 4x.50 cal variants of the US and the Commonwealth, although they still use the same 1200hp Wright Cyclone engine like the British F4F Martlet Mk I variant.

The reasons why the Mexican Wildcat is so different is due to Mexican pilots general preferrence for dogfighting rather than Boom and zoom tactics, which will bite them in the ass later on when facing the Japanese, while the Mexican Wildcat are more nimble than the US ones, its still no match for the super maneuverable Zero in a dogfight.

The twenty year peace was finally shattered when the Soviet Union issued a ultimatum to Finland and Ukraine demanding the territory of Karelia and Crimea. Both said no and with that, Stalin declared war and invaded on September 1, 1939 beginning the Second Weltkrieg.

Immediately Germany and The Danubian Empire declared war on the Soviet Union, this was followed up with the declaration of war from National France, the Union of Britain, and the Kingdom of Sardinia. Mexico came to the defense to her allies and rapidly all three declared war on Mexico and her two client allies.

Other nations that declared war on the Axis were: The Ottoman Empire, The Kingdom of Persia, and Spain.

The Soviet invasion got under way, with them rapidly taking Eastern Ukraine until being halted at the Battle of Zaporizhia in September 12 (beginning a bloody year long battle between the Soviets and the combined armies of Ukraine and Austria), the same with Finland with the first wave failing miserably at taking any land.

300px-Battle_suomussalmi.jpg Battle of Suomussalmi

Meanwhile France and Britain had much more success, with France using a new style of warfare called "Guerre Éclair" or Lightening War and with using combined infantry, planes, and tanks they completely overwhelming the Belgian and Dutch armies on the 20 of September.
While Britain decided to reject completely the Navy and decided to focus more on their British Flying Corp and they dealt a devastating blow to the German High Sea Fleet in what will be known as the Raid on Kiel on September 24, destroying 1 Battleship and damaging multiple Cruisers and Destroyers. This would be the inspiration for the Japanese in two later raids.

Germany was unable to stop the Guerre Éclair at the by October the French had penetrated into the Rhineland, hastily the Field Marshall, Erwin Rommel was able to set a defensive line and the French attack their. The Spanish were not so lucky, the French not only retook Roussillon but even managed to penetrate through the Pyrenees sending Spanish soldiers on the backfoot.

images (5).jpeg Field Marshall Erwin Rommel

In the Alps it was much more sluggish and more slower, of course with it being mountainous, the elite Alpine Bersaglieris duked it out with the elite Austrian Jagdkommandos. The Papal states were not so lucky and the Kingdom of Sardinia easily trounced them and Pope Pius XII became a prisoner in the Vatican. Meanwhile the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies managed to hold their ground against the onslaught however by December they lost Sicily leaving the peninsula.

220px-His_Holiness_Pope_Pius_XII.png Pope Pius XII

In the New World, Mexico mobilized two million soldiers out of a population of 25 million and quickly they signed a pack with the Dominion of Canada to help them regain the British throne if they help in the Naval warfare. But there was a problem: the only Axis nation that even possessed a worthy Navy was the Soviet Union and that wouldn't seem so bad however that left the Marina Imperial completely complacent, completely vulnerable to the Japanese aircraft carriers.

As for the main capital ships of the Union of Britain, Im thinking this would be the list.

-the two Iron Duke super dreadnought battleships, former HMS Benbow, HMS Iron Duke
-the former HMS Tiger battlecruiser
-the Lion class battlecruisers, former HMS Lion ans Princess Royal battlecruisers
-the Colossus class 12 in guns dreadnought battleships, HMS Colossus and HMS Hercules
-the antiquated Lord Nelson class semi/pre-dreadnoughts
-the former HMS Argus and HMS Eagle fleet carriers.

In the aftermath of the Uprising, there are quite alot of Royal Navy ships managed to escape to Canada from the chaos of anarchy. These are the British capital ships that managed to escape their fates and fleed to Canada

-The HMS Hood, British latest battlecruiser that just finished her trials was used to evacuate the Royal Family.
-Two QE class Fast Battleships, the HMS Queen Elizabeth and Warspite,
-Three Courageous class battlecruisers, HMS Courageous, Furious and Glorious
-Two Renown class battlecruisers, Renown and Repulse
-Two Indefatigable class battlecruisers HMAS Australia and HMNZS New Zealand.

These 10 ships alongside 12 cruisers and 42 destroyers and many other auxiliary ship formed part of an exodus fleet that later become the backbone of the Dominion of Canada Navy.

HMS Hood later on was assigned as flagship of their fleet while the two Indefatigable class battlecruisers alongside HMS Repulse were assigned to the Dominion Pacific Fleet to defend their remaining Dominions from the Japanese.

Due to the need of their own fleet carriers, the Dominion of Canada converted the three Courageous class battlecruisers into CVs. The leftover turrets were later reuses on the HMS Vanguard, one of the Dominion latest battleship built before the war.

The remaining majority of former Royal Navy ships now belongs to the newly formed Union of Britain, and the Central Powers later on had scrapped/taken quite alot of the remaining British fleet. Under the new Treaty, the UoB were not allowed to have any BBs with guns larger than 14inch, in the end the UoB only have those remaining ships in the list above as their capital ships.

For the Mexican new construction plan, a class of 16 inch battleships was prepared, after the signing of the new Entente pact with Dominion of Canada and USA, they basically purchased plan for an improved G3 class battlecruiser, and this is what they built, these ships are just as tough as the Iowa class, but their 406mm guns are the same as the smaller Commonwealth's Nelson class battleships (which means these guns are only marginally better than the older 380mm guns) these ships are based on British battlecruiser plans, thats why they looks like British ships and can be ready at a shorter period of time (2-3 years) for naming these ships, that i will leave to you to decide.

These ships are what Britain would have built if they were not restricted by Washington Treaty OTL. So yeah, i think having a Mexican G3 would sounds like a good idea to counter the Yamato class. The Dominion of Canada stick with the Nelson class BBs due to budgetary reasons. About 2-6 ships would be built as response to the Japanese commissioning the Yamato class. The US Navy answer to these Mexican fast battleships would be the 1920 South Dakota class and the newer Iowa class.

In OTL, Britain has built battleships and Battlecruisers for other nations, Spain, Brazil, Chile, Empire of Japan and Ottoman Empire. So I think a Mexican-friendly Dominion of Canada would have also likely to help Mexico out for tech supports in modernizing their fleet as well.

The war for the Central Powers was going bad: November 17 France launched another Guerre Éclair through Alsace Lorraine and did something they failed to do in the First Weltkrieg retaking it and made it all the way through Straẞburg, until the German army managed to stop them.

In the Eastern front, the Battle of Zaporizhia still raged on, while in Finland, the Soviets suffered another defeat. But in the Baltics they were completely successful in overrunning the Lithuanian and Duchy armies and by the end of November, they were in control of the Baltics and were beginning the invasion of Poland, however this was delayed by their old enemies: the Ottoman Empire, now reborned after the Weltkrieg and made wealthy with the oil and Suez canal they were able to completely modernize and using the Ottoman Navy they crossed the Black Sea into Crimea taking the Soviets there completely by surprise. The invasion of Poland had to be delayed untill the Ottomans were out of Crimea.

In Iberia the French were overwhelming the Spanish forces and were pushing them so back, that they were nearly at Madrid. Until the first French defeat: the Battle of Guadalajara. In December 8, the Spanish were able to use artillery only targeting the French tanks and when this left the infantry alone the Spanish infantry launched massive counterattacks pushing the French back giving Madrid breathing room.

Bundesarchiv_Bild_183-2006-1204-500,_Spanien,_Schlacht_um_Guadalajara.jpg Battle of Guadalajara

In Ireland, the British Navy began blockading ports and the British invaded through Northern Ireland and they were greeted by the Protestants. The Irish army mounted a defensive at Derry and as the Battle of Derry began on the 15 of December the Irish suffered massive losses and were forced to retreat South.

Meanwhile in Mexico they sent the first contingent of MEF totaling 150,000 soldiers in three places: 1. To Ireland, 2. Spain, 3. Kingdom of the Two Sicilies all under the command of Field Marshall, Francisco Villa. On December 20, they landed in Galicia, Spain and in Ireland. While the third was late by five days and landed in Sicily beginning the retaking the island.

Now everything was in the balance until a Eastern enemy decided to enter the War.

On a second thought, I think Juan Peron of Argentina is actually a pretty level-headed man, he would always prefer maintain friendly relations with both sides of the conflict, as he would never want to risk his nation that just got to the position of a regional power and a well-developed nation among the strongest military in South America to go to war against El Grande Segundo Imperio Mexicano.

For Peron case, his government against the Mexicans in the Brazilian Civil War is a massive political boost for his popularity in Argentina that will guaranteed his longer rule and maintain stability for Argentina as long as he could. As he is only a second-in-command here, the decision of the real president basically decided everything.

The real problem in here is actually his generals and the president of the Republic, General Arturo Rawson , who tend to butt heads with him because he is too lean on the liberals and democrats. There is a high chance that Peron would be deposed by a coup and fled to Mexico in exile alongside his wife Eva Peron, while the Argentine Junta basically took control over the nation and attacks Falklands over the promises by the Union of Britain and Soviet Union on supporting them.

Oh and the real reason for Argentina aggressive stance against Mexico can be this event here, ITTL its a coup which deposed a conservative president Ramon Castillo who was regarded as "Too Mexico-friendly" and saw a change to a military government lead by Arturo Rawson and Juan Peron as President and Vice President respectively. This event can happens way sooner, before the Brazilian Civil War that is

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1943_Argentine_coup_d'état

For the case of Chile, this actually exists OTL, i think you can fix this event into a successful fascist coup that turned the Chilean government from neutral to declaring war with the Entente by having the Argentine promised Chile with concessions in Central America taken from Imperial Mexican protectorates.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seguro_Obrero_massacre

For the newly established Brazillian Republic case, if Getulio Vargas is the president like the OTL, then he is likely to align with fascist side, even if he would prefer neutral, the Brazilian Republicans would likely want to declare war on Mexico the moment they can. In OTL he also emulate the pseudo-fascist economy model of Esta Nuevo like the OTL Portuguese Republic, which keep Brazil prosperous and economically stable throughout the war. However given the case of Brazilian Republicans hatred against the Mexican "Imperialists" ITTL, things might go south here for Brazil neutrality in the previous war.

So the Falklands War ITTL will happens sooner than the OTL, but it would be a showdown between Mexico, Britain against the combined fleet of Argentina, Chile, and possibly Brazil?

Meanwhile in Mexico City a great tragedy happened on December 20, Empress Beatrice died giving birth and now Emperor Emiliano needed a wife, and this posed a great opportunity for a family.

(I did the best I can)

The Romanov family had been living exile first in London until the revolution forced them to flee to Brazil, until the Brazilian Civil War exploded and again they were force to flee again. "Why has God cursed us?" Was the thought of former Czar Nicholas as they arrived in Veracruz back in March 1936, now fast forward to 1939, and Empress Beatrice is now dead and this presented a great opportunity, former Czar Nicholas presented himself to the new Prime Minister Lazaro Cárdenas on the possibility of the Emperor marrying his youngest daughter, Anastasia.

230px-Lázaro_Cárdenas,_Retrato.png Prime Minister Lazaro Cárdenas

Cárdenas was reluctant to say the least, for staters she was Othordox Christian and she was the Russian Czar's daughter, the same Czar many Mexican soldiers died fighting against in the First Weltkrieg. Prime Minister Cárdenas presented the offer to Emiliano and he fell in love with her and that's when Cárdenas told him of her Othordox religion and that the Chamber of Deputies would not agree to the marriage.

With that the Emperor decided to just ignore what the Constitution said and proposed to Anastasia and the two were going to marry. The Chamber exploded into protests with even Reformists joining with the conservatives.

Again the Emperor threatened to abdicate, that's when the Chamber realizing that if he abdicates, in the middle of a war, this would cause anarchy so they decided to reach a compromise: Emiliano can marry Anastasia but their children will be raised as Catholics. Both agreed and on the December 25 the two married and Anastasia was now Empress Anastasia, creating the House of Iturbide-Saxe Coburg und Gotha- Romanov. The reaction in the Soviet Union was of panic, now the Romanovs have a possibility of returning and declared war on Mexico.

Mexican Empire reconcilling with its former Great War enemies? Damn a surprise to be sure, but its a welcome one

So yeah, overall the OTL events in Argentina and Chile can happens in pre-war period ITTL, and suffice to say, even though Peron is a right-hand man to another president, he still technically in charge of the Argentinian military and government to an extent. And given that there are actual coups/attempted coups in these two nations, this can be tweaked ITTL into a joint-alliance against Mexico, starting with their successful cooperation in overthrowing Brazilian monarchy.

Now, for other South American nations with sizeable tank corps, we have Bolivia and Peru, in the Interbellum period, Bolivia actually had acquired quite alot of tanks from other powers, three British Vickers 6 ton tanks (one twin turrets model and two single turret models), six British Carden Loyd Mk VI tankettes, one French Renault FT and a dozen of Italian L3/35 tankettes. Bolivia lost all of its Vickers 6 ton tanks during the Chaco War against Paraguay however.

Also i was wondering, did Empress Beatrice give the Emperor an heir after her maternal death yet? If she does, then the Mexican throne might still have an heir before the Emperor remarries a Romanov.

No she and her baby died because of blood loss.
Damn, i guess this is definitely a succession crisis for Mexico, unless the Emperor second marriage managed to bear him a child. Although technically speaking, if he died heirless, then we still has another candidate.

ITTL we have one of the Emperor's nephews, Prince Franz Joseph of Poland, son of the Emperor's sister, Queen Elisabeth Marie of Saxe-Colburg und Gotha y Iturbide and the Austrian Prince Otto Weriand von Windisch-Grätz. He can still inherit the throne, but with the condition that he renounced his claim to Polish throne that is. If he ever succeed his uncle as Emperor of Mexico, his title would have been Francis José I de Mexicana instead. (he is actually one of her 4 children OTL with the same Austrian Prince)
