Maximilian's legacy: Interwar and Post World War 2

For the Don Juan question, its unlikely as the Bourbon of Spain had already sworn to renounced all their claims to the throne of France, that and French public opinions is pretty much apathetic to the idea of a monarchy restoration.

Also if Don Juan was to become a monarch of France, it would be a big stain to the Mexican Imperial Family especially on their Bourbon relatives in Spain as it would basically sounds like the Bourbons are stabbing the Mexican Iturbides in the back with another relative on the opposing side in Second Weltkrieg, doesnt help the fact that France doesnt like having the Bourbons back either.

So pressures from Spain and Mexico as well as the anti-Bourbon sentiment in France would be the main reasons why Don Juan have to refuse the throne.

Also i know this question is abit overdue ITTL, but what is the message of the Zimmermann Telegram be? Considering Second Mexican Empire and German Empire are already close allies in pre-WW1 period, the alliance between Germany and Mexico is pretty much known to everyone in the world.

Could it be the secret Naval codes that marked the beginning of the Suez campaign that the two have planned with one another in case the Great War broke out?

I'm back guys, I'm sorry for the silence, I've been sick and went to the hospital but now I'm back and I will finish this ATL for all you and this will be my Magnum Opus. Thank you for reading this ATL and for sticking by.

The German Empire was now the undisputed superpower in Europe and with Kaiser Wilhelm's dream of Germany's place under the sun completed he decided to finally take a more laid-back position in politics and letting the SDP leader and Reichskanzler, Friedrich Ebert, to dominate the Reichstag and under him the militant and absolute German Empire was now transitioning into a constitutional monarchy, basically what Mexico was.

images (5).jpeg Kaiser Wilhelm II, now an older more wiser monarch
images (6).jpeg Reichskanzler Friedrich Ebert

This was opposed by the old elite Junkers, such as Ludendorff, and there were attempts on Ebert's life, one notorious example: while Ebert was touring Munich, a former WW1 veteran and German nationalist came up to Ebert and shot him three times and tried to escape, however Ebert's bodyguards shot and one bullet went through his heart, instantly killing him. Ebert was rushed to the hospital and after multiple surgeries and rehabilitation, Ebert survived. As for the soldier; he was a Austrian national, mistaken for a Bohemian Corporal, and was also a failed artist. He was revealed as Adolf Hitler, he's body was buried in a pauper's grave, unmarked and was quickly forgotten.

images (7).jpeg Corporal Hitler's WW1 picture

Germany's position in Europe was secured having a completely neutered France and Britain to the West and a weak and famine ridden Soviet Union to East, not to mention two buffer states and a now rejuvenated Danubian and Ottoman Empires as it's allies in Europe, also a German friendly Mexico who will come to it's defense. Germany's economy was now the dominate in the world in front of the Danubian Empire's in second place and Second Mexican Empire in third.

The Pax Germania was the greatest period of German hegemony in it's history, but not everything was all sunshine and rainbows for one: the problem was now that the German military was now coming under control of the politicians. Then there was the situation with Britain and France who either refused or couldn't make back their reparations so the German military had to take matters into their own hands: 1. Was bombing and blockading Britain to get them to continue their payments. 2. Was occupying the Grand Est region of France to collect the payments themselves.

Now the year was 1934 and already they were seeing belligerence in National France, The Union of Britain, Kingdom of Sardinia, and the Soviet Union. Again fearing encirclement Germany created a new Quadruple Alliance with Germany, The Danubian Empire, Second Mexican Empire, and The Kingdom of the Two Sicilies; the latter required German military training, funding, and weapons to prop them up. As another counter balance the German Client Kingdoms: Finland, Lithuania, and the United Baltic Duchy along with Bulgaria formed the "Little Mittelmächt", while Mexico formed "The Catholic alliance" consisting of Mexico, her colonies, Poland, Ireland, and Spain as a buffer against Britain, France, the Soviet Union, and Japan.

Germany greatly hoped that this would deter all hostile powers, they were proven wrong in September 1, 1939.

ITS ALIVE!! YES YES!

I think that if you ever complete this, you should definitely revisit this timeline at a later time again and rewrite them into one thread with more details and events that happened to make it more consistent and diverse.

Still, Im glad you are still around to finish this timeline. It has too many potentials left unanswered for the future.

Can you give me any examples please on how i can improve this?

Well, for a start, you could write description for the major nations aka the Great Powers that played major key roles ITTL as well as expand further on their economy, demographics, military etc etc. Make them like a wiki articles but try to summarized those details as short as possible

That and also we could use more details on the changes of Mexico economic and social changes during the time it become a Great Power, as well as more details on the Great War era as i think alot of the events in it has been glossed over.

Do you have any ideas for a WW2 Mexican tank?

Well i had a few ideas on how WW2 Mexican tanks would looks like. In fact we have many interwar candidates to go for

The Oberschliesen Sturmwagen medium tank

This is basically a German design, but its actually a pretty advanced design for a WW1 tank, armed with a 57mm gun, two MG 08s. The design is technically a medium sized lightly armored assault tank. This tank can be used as a replacement for the Burstyn type tanks

Second candidate is the LK II, which could be used as tankettes, or light tanks, its only armed with a single MG 08 machien gun with a crew of two. This tank is ideally suited for colonial security and defense. Also used by Sweden during post WW1 period.
396AA305-3890-4A09-A476-4366E7F23CDD.jpeg C0F4209C-56C7-40E5-9927-5BB50368BBF5.jpeg 7A5D38A4-4194-4C6E-9869-B41000893872.jpeg

Of course, the Renault FT would still be part of this TL Mexican army, these tanks despite ended on the losing side are still useful. Considering Spain deployed lots of them in Rif War, Mexico would have likely to have picked up the license and production for the tanks (or captured them as war prizes) in post war period.

For the modern Mexican light tanks, i suggests the Polish cavalry tank 10TP, armed with Bofors 37mm gun and a crew of 3 while capable of going above 40km/h, but armor would be pretty thin (20mm front side back, 8mm bottom and top) This tank would served well as the Mexican equivalent to the British cruise tank line.

Given the closeness between Poland and Mexico ITTL, its likely to have this tank produced in Mexico earlier since the Christie suspension can be directly purchased from the US easily and the tank design can be prepared earlier with the suspension being readily available sooner by the time war broke out.

Great love the tank design. Stay tune because by 12:30 hopefully I will be posting on the chaos of the Second Empire of Brazil.

After the restoration of the House of Braganza, the Second Empire of Brazil played a more low-key role in South American politics and decided to just preserve itself and by that logic, there were massive purges in both the Army and the Government of anyone having Republican sympathies.

During the Weltkrieg Brazil was at first "neutral" but helped greatly Mexico and was Pro-Central Powers, until the Ponta Delgada massacres happened, which horrified Brazil so much that they official stated their neutrality and that was it for Brazilian involvement in the Weltkrieg. In the signing of the Treaty of Berlin, Brazil was given British Guiana as compensation for helping Mexico, while Mexico got to keep French Guiana.

During the Interwar decade two things happened: 1. Empress Isabel died and was succeeded by her son, Pedro III. 2. Brazil entered a recession that brought the economy crashing down. The reason was Mexico refused to help or invest in the Brazilian economy because they were busy investing and constructing in Poland and Ireland. Unemployment raised and discontent with the monarchy grew and nostalgia for the Republic grew, while it was corrupt, at least people had jobs and the economy was stable. But the most damning thing was the Brazilian population growing hatred towards what the saw as the Brazilian monarchy being puppets to the Mexican Empire just as Portugal was.

Prince_Pedro_Henrique_of_Orléans-Braganza.jpg Pedro III

In the Government, corruption had spiraled out of control with was has been named the "in out" politics with Politicians replacing one government from a different state in return for favors to another state.

In 1932, The Paulista rebellion began in July 9 with officers under Pedro Manual de Toledo leading a officers revolt with the aim of a new constitution and a end of the corruption.

Pintura_Oficial_de_Pedro_Manuel_de_Toledo.jpg Pedro Manual de Toledo

The rebellion stood no chance of triumph, the Government Army had more soldiers, aeroplanes, the Navy, and more artillery pieces. By October 2 the rebellion was put down and many assumed the soldiers would be given clemency, except that didn't happen instead what happened would be called Bloody October where over 20,000 officers were executed, including de Toledo.

300px-Soldados_paulista_em_trincheira_em_Silveiras,_1932.jpg the Paulista Rebellion

This caused a uproar and instead of ending the Rebellion it morphed into a civil war with Government and monarchist troops against Republicans, communists, and reformers. This also devolved into a proxy war between the Second Mexican Empire vs Argentina, with Mexico supporting the Government and Argentina supporting the rebels.

By October 1936, the rebels were nearly defeated and were now stuck in the Amazon fighting a guerilla war along with natives. This would lead to vicious reprisals on the indigenous people by the government soldiers. Because of this, it would lead to Bolivia and Peru intervening to protect Indian rights.

By 1939, the tables had turned against the Brazilian government, with Argentina, Bolivia, and Peru intervening against the monarchy and worst the Second Weltkrieg had begun and Mexico had to withdraw all support to Brazil.
By December 14, 1939, Emperor Pedro III fled to Portugal and the Second Brazilian Republic was proclaimed but was severely weakened and was little more than a Argentine Puppet.

Continue on the tank part.

For interwar medium tanks, they could also go for these alternatives

The US M1921 Medium tank, based on the British Vickers Medium Mk D tank, a 23 tons medium tank design with 1inch armor front sides and back, armament consist of a QF 6 pounder gun in the turret and two machine guns for defense (one in the secondary turret, one in the hull) with maximum speed of 15km/h.

The US Army rejected this design but i think this tank would served well in the Mexican Army who need more modern medium tanks in their armored units.

For mid to late war medium tank, something similar to the Argentinian Nahuel D.L.43. It’s basically similar to the early Sherman tanks of the US,cusing same suspension and same 75mm gun.

For heavy tank, I suggest the OTL Hungarian 44M TAS, this tank is basically Hungarian answer to T-34 and Panther. ITTL however, the A-H Empire still exists so the Mexican Army can get this tank in two ways, by setting up their own licensed production back in Mexico or received lend-lease tanks directly when they deployed their expeditionary forces in Europe. Basically main battle tank used by both the Danubian Empire and the Mexican Empire in the war

This 36 tons tank would have had a crew of 5, armor from 20-150mm. Armed with either a 75mm Pak 40 or the Swedish Bofors 80mm AT gun with two MGs (one coax one for AA mount), its also capable of reaching 45km/h.

Other OTL tanks that the Mexican forces can use would be, US Marmon Herrington CTMS or the CTVL light tanks ( these were used by Mexico OTL) or the Czech Lt vz 38 tanks (used by Peru OTL) and the British Vickers 6 tons (used by Bolivia OTL).

Of course, the Imperial Mexican Army in the Pacific would also likely to receive Shermans as part of the lend lease program to fight the Japanese in island hopping campaign as most of the tanks produced in Mexican local industry are not enough to keep up with the war demands.(a lot of them has been sent away to Europe and Africa)

The real reasons for the Mexican Empire using licensed or lend leases foreign tanks are due to their local tank production unable to meet the demands as Mexico also need to deployed its military across its colonies to defend against the ever growing military of the Japanese, UoB and Vichy France and the Soviet Union as well as dealing with the communist and fascist insurrections in their colonies.

Also for the tanks used by Britain (the Dominion), USA, Japan, Italy and France its still the same like OTL however for the German Empire and Post War Austro-Hungary/Danubian Empire you will need some changes.

Because Czechoslovakia, Hungary were not annexed by German ITTL, all their locally designed and produced tanks ITTL are basically used by the Danubian Empire instead. That means the OTL German tanks and tank destroyers based on Czech designs like lt vz 38/Panzer 38t, lt vz 35/Panzer 35t and Marders using Czech tank chassis and Hetzer are basically used by the Danubian Army ITTL instead.

Which means the German Empire in the early stage of the war would have: the WW1 era LK II light tanks and Sturmpanzer Oberschliesen II medium tanks, the Panzer I-II light tanks, Panzer III and IV medium tanks and lastly, the Neubaufahrzeug multi turret Heavy tanks.

For tank destroyers, the Germans would use the Jadgpanzer I with Austrian Skoda 47mm AT gun, Marder armed with 75mm field guns based on the Panzer II chassis and of course, the Stug III with short and long barrel 75mm guns.

Some other tanks that can be used as Mexican tanks ITTL
These are from Spain few indigenous designs , the Verdeja tank series. OTL wise, the Verdeja project was cancelled due to the availability of surplus Panzer IV tanks from the Germany.

Verdeja 1-2 are normal light tanks, weighting around 6-7 tons, armor between 7-25mm. Armed with a 45mm gun and two MGs. Speed:44km/h. Given Spain and Mexico closeness ITTL, this tank is also a viable option for Imperial Mexican Army and its one of the few tank designs based on the British Vickers 6 tons and Soviet T-26 tanks.

There is also an open topped SPG variant of the Verdeja, armed with a 75mm howitzer instead of a standard tank turret.

Also, if Peron is the President of Argentina ITTL then I think Argentina has a high chance of joining the fascists and communists alliance, which is coincidentally accurate with some of the OTL situations actually.

Hell, the OTL Juan Peron is a big fan of Mussolini and even try to emulate Italian fascism through his own ideology Peronism, later on he also work with the communists on many occasions to be able to gain back his President seat (ex. Peron actually have worked with Che Guevara on several occasions) after the coup by his own generals. IDK which path he will go this time but given there is a powerful Mexican Empire up north, he would feels threatened, but there is also a chance he would stay neutral.

Which means the case of a Fascist Argentina is entirely possible ITTL and looks like the Mexican Empire definitely gonna have to fight on its own continent in this second Weltkrieg and can no longer had their border safe from invasion this time around.

I'm banking that Peron will stay neutral, if he can't control his own generals then what's going to stop them from turning on him and making a alliance with the AlT allied Powers?

If that is the case then what was the state of the Argentine army and Navy? And how does this compare to just the Mexican Marina Imperial?
