Maximilian I of Mexico has a son

as it says on the tin if Maximilian and Charlotte have a son born in say 1858, what changes? Does Maximilian still accept the offer of the Mexican throne? If so does his son escape if he still dies?

Not sure having a son at that time would change much things, personally. As for what would be said son's fate if things go like OTL, I'm pretty sure the Empress would've brought him with her to Europe, as a just in case. Or if he stayed with Maximillian, perhaps it makes him reconsider about accepting being executed. But who knows.

Personally, I think a much more interesting scenario is if said son is born after he's crowned emperor.

Oh? How so?

If they have their own kid Max and Carlota might not "adopt" the Iturbide kids, not sure if that effects anything.

One intresting thing is that he is second to Austria-Hungarian throne after his cousin and emperor Franz Joseph son Rudolph if then he not be removed from lineage.

Indeed indeed which has interesting consequences if he's in the live of succession

I'd thik he would still do that. As the purpose of adopting them was to legitimize his rule. Of course, if he did had a son as early as 1858, it might change his stance on the matter. He could think that he could just have a second son born in Mexico itself. Who knows.

Would having a son really secure his inheritance if he accepts going to Mexico?

Hmm would Maximilian even go to Mexico with a son?

I'd think he would. He had personal interest in the country, so I'd see him accepting the offer regardless. It's not like he was busy, as since 1859 (after Austria lost Lombardy and Venetia, and thus, his viceroy position was dissolved) he had been mostly secluded in Miramar Castle with personal pursuits. So unless having a son is a huge change to his actions post-1859, he would still accept.

Fair fair, of he dies, what becomes of his son then? Does he still have rights to Austria?

It depends. I think he would survive the whole thing. Even if he's not brought back to Europe by Charlotte, I don't see Juarez ordering the execution of a child. At least, I'd think he wouldn't have done it. Anyway, regarding inheritance... who knows. He might be stripped out of it like his father, or maybe things change if he has a sibling by the time the Second Empire is gone. So... yeah, it largely depends, I'd guess.

Alright I think if he keeps his inheritance, things are going to get very interesting
