In 1938 Maurice Bavaud, a Swiss Roman Catholic attempted to assassinate Hitler at the anniversary of the Beer Hall Putsch. This failed obviously, but due to the simple fact that Hitler was on the other side of the street to him, rather than in the middle and so put him out of range of Bavaud's shots.
But, what if in 1938 Hitler had chosen to march along in the centre of the road, and so easily within range of Bavaud's pistol. The man shot at least 3 rounds into Hitler, one hitting his heart, one hitting his thigh and the other slamming into his shoulder. Bavaud is slammed to the ground by a Nazi follower nearby while the people around him stand in shock.
Hitler is taken to a nearby hospital as quickly as possible, but it's no use. The Führer died at 01:32 on 10 November 1938. He'd left Germany at a poignant time, after it had annexed Austria just a mere 9 months beforehand, and also around a month and 11 days earlier Germany had annexed the Sudentland from the nearby Czechoslovakia.
But what happens now? The Führer is dead, would Deputy Führer Rudolf Hess take over as the Führer, or would it be someone else. What would happen next with Germany? And how would this affect OTL WWII?
