Malin Karlsson, the well known journalist and author did not have a easy time growing up. She was her parents only child and was a loved child. The family lived in a high rising apartment in the area of Pettersberg in Västerås. Her mother worked part time as a medical secretary and her father was a sports journalist on the local paper VLT. When she began school she had trouble in class and it was revealed that she suffered from a mild form of dyslexia. On the day she finished first class she and her mother went out to celebrate and buy ice cream. They were hit by another car that ran a stop light and her mother died in the accident while Malin spent the summer break in the hospital. After getting out of the hospital she lived alone with her father. Her father wanted to get the best for his daughter and worked as hard as he could while she was looked after by her grandmother. She spent a lot of time following her father to work and she was at age 11 well known in most locker rooms. She had friends but never liked sports. She liked to exercise on her own and was often jogging. In school she did better and better and when she got her first grades they were 3,8(max 5.0). Then disaster struck again. Her father was doing a post game interview with Västerås IK hockey after they had managed to stay in the Swedish Elitserien after defeating Västra Frölunda 3 games to 2 when he suffered a major heart attack. Her grandmother did all the funeral arrangements while trying to cope with the loss of her son and figuring out how she would raise the girl.
After finishing the 9th grade she went to Carlforsska gymnasiet and the social studies class. She soon found herself surrounded by a mix of friends that were called the entourage. She also met her first love in the form of the theater intrested Anders Andersson. They dated during their time in school and she had a role as an extra on Rederiet a few times, but did not like acting, she liked more to write.
After finishing Carlforsska Malin went to the journalisthögskolan(high school for journalists) and had internship for the local paper VLT. In 1995 she got job at VLT.
