Apparently there are old roots to the private school movement. When schools in the Southhad to integrate some counties chose to shut down their public schools. What would have happened if they succeeded in resisting desegregation? To keep poor whites involved and in school, u guess they could have used the Klan to collect a tuition fund while slowly starving the public schools of funds. There'd be less money for busing and some campuses would have to be sold off.


Or they could have waited a few decades and then push for vouchers just like today.
 
I thought they did. From what I've read more students are in "segregated" classes now than 60 years ago. It just isn't done by law any more.

It's not exactly the same. Efforts by a state are just going to be clumsy and more easily fought than the much more local efforts of OTL that have given us modern segregated schooling.

Primary, direct attacks on integration give bad press and are pretty much destined to fail by the 1950s. I don't think a greater effort here would've changed much; just fed into the general atmosphere of the times.
