Massflip: Gov. Brown, Sen. Romney

POD 1994. Elect Mitt Romney a Massachusetts Senator and Scott Brown Governor. Bonus if you can get Brown elected in 2002.

In 1994, Senator Kennedy suffered a fatal aneurysm. He was 62.

After a week of mourning, Governor William Weld appointed Eliot Richardson as interim Senator. In November 1994, Mitt Romney was among the many Republicans swept into the House and Senate following midterm elections. Romney defeats his Democratic opponent Raymond Flynn becomes the first Republican in 22 years to win a Senate seat in Massachusetts. Rep. Joe Kennedy refused to run for his uncle's Senate seat. Many liberal (and pro-choice Democrats) refused to vote for the pro-life Boston mayor.

In 1996, Weld decides not to run against Senator John Kerry and endorses his Lieutenant Governor Bill Cellucci who surprisingly takes 46 percent of the vote.

President Bill Clinton nominates Cellucci to be Ambassador to Mexico. With almost no paper trail of Cellucci, Senate Foreign Relations Chairman Jesse Helms does not block the nomination. Weld picks state Senator Scott Brown for Lt Governor.

In 1998, Weld retires and Brown wins the GOP nomination for Governor. Brown is elected Governor over Democrat Scott Harshbarger.

Due to butterflies, Al Gore is elected President in 2000. Senator Romney is defeated for reelection. Gore nominates Senator Kerry for Secretary of State and Bill Weld for Attorney General. Both are confirmed.

Governor Brown appoints state legislator Jane Swift to the Senate. Swift becomes the first US Senator to give birth while in office. She decides not to seek a full 6 year term in 2002 paving the way for Brown to run for the Senate.

With 69 percent job approval ratings, very few Democrats are unwilling to take on Brown and he defeats a sacrificial lamb to win election to the Senate.
