Martin Van Buren in 1844?

Martin Van Buren was nearly nominated on the first ballot at the Democratic National Convention in 1844, but his opinions on the annexation of Texas cost him southern and western support. What if he had kept his opinion mum, only coming out with his less aggressive stance after the nomination? Clay's chances of beating Van Buren are very good, but what do the pro-annexation Democrats do now that Van Buren nominee? Is there any chance they could go to Tyler and his third party?

The Democratic Party splits 16 years early as many Southern Democrats refuse to endorse Van Buren and instead support Tyler's third party bid. A Clay victory is guaranteed, and the Whigs pick up seats in the House.

IOTL, many northern Democrats were resentful toward the southern wing for dumping Van Buren; ITTL, it'll be worse now that they've actually supported a splinter ticket. I'm going to guess the Democrats will reunite by 1848 probably.

Interestingly, it was a Whing principle of congress being supreme, ie that a presidential veto should not be used. So you might end up with a whing presiden with an anxeionist congress

Van Buren could not win the support of southerners at the convention unless he actually came out in favor of annexation--which was endorsed by the platform. "Resolved, That our title to the whole of the Territory of Oregon is clear and unquestionable; that no portion of the same ought to be ceded to England or any other power, and that the reoccupation of Oregon and the re-annexation of Texas at the earliest practicable period are great American measures, which this Convention recommends to the cordial support of the Democracy of the Union." https://www.presidency.ucsb.edu/documents/1844-democratic-party-platform

Old Tip he wears a homespun coat
He has no ruffled shirt-wirt-wirt
But Mat he has a golden plate
And he's a little squirt-wirt-wirt

Sorry, but Martin Van Buren was the Hillary Clinton of his day. Skilled as he was at playing the strategies and attaching his fortunes to the great leaders of his party, he was too easily slandered as an elitist and quickly became damaged goods on the national stage. I just don't think he'd manage a political comeback.

I agree, Van Buren definitely won't win 1844, I was mainly asking to see if the election could go to the House due to Tyler.
