Mark Hammill plays Joker in "The Dark Knight"

I dont know if he even auditioned, but what if Mark Hamill, who already played Joker in Batman:TAS, had gotten the role as the Joker in The Dark Knight? If so, would the character change? I always thought he had the perfect Joker anyway (he could go from insane to angry to casual in the blink of an eye).

The TAS Joker wouldn't fit Nolan's Gotham. Ledger's Joker, while not very close to (most) comic versions, definitely did.

At that time after the success of Batman Begins (which the studio loved him for) he was picking whoever he wanted for the parts. His two big picks for The Joker were Heath Ledger and Adrian Brody. If they both said no, I don't know who else he'd consider.

FWIW, it wouldn't be out of character for Nolan, seeing as he seems to have a penchant for casting actors perceived to be "past their prime" in many of his films. See Tom Berenger in Inception and Matthew Modine in The Dark Knight Rises, for example.

Yes, but the Joker is just too primal, not to mention important, for Nolan to put an older guy into, IMO. And I don't think Hammill's screen presence is right.

I think the major role in the series Mark would be most likely to get is the one that was offered to Kurt Russell, who turned it down--Jim Gordon.

What you experienced was MH's voice acting being that versatile.

Screen acting? Outside of the trilogy I'm thinking of the movie I remember him most for, The Big Red One. I can barely remember his performance.

Though I agree he's a pretty solid actor. I think a role like Gordon is best suited to his talents.

As said, tone was different.

But more importantly, it just would never, ever happen. He's an old voice actor. No one would ever consider him for a screen joker. Never. The only possible way would be if he was still a film presence and had not done the Joker in the animated series, and in some universe where a Batman was made at an earlier time in history. Even then, no, because he doesn't look like a Joker. Mark Hammill's voice is Joker. Mark Hammill the man and actor is not.

As much as I love hammill as the joker I don't think it works well. His joker is a little too over the top for the more subdued verson nolan needs.

There seems to be a lot of Batman stuff this week. Anyway a Hammil casting is unlikely for reasons that have already been articulated. That does not mean Ledger was the only option here. If not him you probably see Paul Bettany in the role. Though like with anything else there were crazy rumours about the role. At one point there was speculation that Michael Keaton had been cast. Yes that Michael Keaton.
