The recent F-14 instead of F-15 thread got me thinking about other possible users of the aircraft...Matt Wiser (I believe) mentioned a number of possible Air Defense users (NORAD, RAF, JASDF, etc.), but here's one that maybe isn't usual: the Marines! Yes, according to Wikipedia the Marines wanted to use the F-14 to replace their F-4s, but pulled out when the A2G capability for the F-14 was deleted (reasonably enough for the Marines, considering). So...suppose the A2G capability isn't deleted, what happens? Do the Marines go through with replacing their F-4s with F-14s? What about the obvious attraction of substituting strike *fighters* for strike aircraft on the carrier (eg., the F-14 replacing, say, the A-7 (it had a similar weight limit and number of hardpoints)? Any other changes?
