Marie Antoinette's head on a stick

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Women's_March_on_Versailles#Summary

Though they were accompanied by twenty thousand National Guardsmen charged with keeping order under the command of Lafayette, in the early hours of the morning the mob broke into the palace. Two of the royal bodyguards were killed, their heads severed and stuck high on pikes. The queen and two of her ladies-in-waiting narrowly escaped with their lives through a secret passageway leading to the king's bedchamber before the crowd burst in and ransacked her chambers.

WI Marie Antoinette had not escaped in time and the mob had lynched her?

If the mob had 20,000 soldiers intended to keep them under control and still got out of control, either those were crappy soldiers or that was one BIG mob.

ST,

It might prompt earlier Austrian actions against the Republic or even an earlier general war.

After all, the Republic allowed (or appeared to allow) the murder of a defenseless woman, even though she was egging on foreign intervention to restore Louis XVI.

Just a simple Q: Did Valmy happen after the death of the royals?

Leopold II, Marie Antoinette's brother, was the major force behind "don't hurt the royal family or you're in trouble."

If Marie Antoinette is killed, Austria might go in alone for revenge. This could backfire, since MA was hated for being Austrian (among other reasons) and could unite the general French public in a war against the Austrians.

However, if Leopold can organize the monarchical states of Europe for a wider, earlier intervention, it might be easier for them.

So we have an earlier Bourbon Restoration?
