Marie Antoinette Question????

So, just a question, but what are your thoughts/and/or what was the reasoning behind Marie Antoinette having never been crowned Queen-consort of France? Granted she was conferred the style and status with all rights and privileges upon Louis XVI’s ascension, but why was there no formal coronation for her? Previous and future French consorts alike had undergone them and were only allowed to be known as “the king’s wife” prior to having done so.

Because coronations for Queens consort had fallen entirely out of favor in France by the time Louis XVI ascended the throne. The last such coronation was that of Marie de' Medici in 1610, so 164 years had passed by then.

@Olena There was the question of finances to start with. There were many in the anti-Austrian party who cited this as the reason for why Antoinette wasn't crowned. Her mother regarded it as an insult, even though Antoinette seemingly DIDN'T personally mind much (IIRC).

@Emperor Constantine: it wasn't so much it had gone out of fashion. No queen had been crowned SEPARATELY to her husband since Maria de Medici (and her coronation followed by Henri IV's assassination was seen as a bad omen). However, a married king had not ascended the throne since Henri IV.
Louis XIII, XIV and XV had all married AFTER they had ascended. And then their consorts were NOT crowned for the bad taste relating to Maria de Medici mentioned above.
