As you well know, the Pragmatic Sanction and War of the Austrian Succession happen because Charles VI, Holy Roman Emperor had at first no children and then only daughters. Suppose though his son, Leopold Johann, born just over a year before Maria Theresa had lived to adulthood? Say he lives to either Mara Theresa's lifespan or Maria Anna's. What are the long-term repercussions of delaying by a generation or more, or not having at all, a war of the Austrian Succession? Who does Archduke, later Emperor Leopold marry? Who do his sisters marry given that he is going to succeed their father? Have at it.

With a male heir there is most probably no war and Austria is not loosing Silesia. The issue of Lorraine is an open question.

I remember a similar thread a couple of years ago about this topic, first off it alters Charles VI's reign quite a bit since he wouldn't be under pressure to secure his daughter's succession to the Austrian lands. So Austria won't be giving up it's infant colonial projects and the Ostend Company, the butterflies could also affect the War of the Polish Succession, not to mention the butterflies for Maria Theresa's RL husband, Francis I (who in this TL would most likely stay Francis Stephen, Duke of Lorraine), he won't be giving up Lorraine to gain the Grand Duchy of Tuscany, however the de'Medici's will still die out creating a succession crisis in Tuscany anyway due to the timeframe the TL is set in.

So I could still see France seizing Lorraine and Francis being made the heir to Tuscany as compensation AND to keep it from falling directly into Habsburg hands.

As for marriage for Leopold Johann, hard to say though if France and Austria still stay antagonistic in this TL I don't see a French Princess in Leopold's future. In fact in Imperial terms I could see Leopold being forced to 'marry down' due to a lack of candidates with sufficient rank, though said woman would HAVE to be Catholic (or willing to convert) in this era.

I agree things are better for Austria with an heir. They can avoid being Britain’s patsy and see where their Ostend Company takes them.

The Polish Succession is an interesting one. Can they split the Spanish and French with marriages. Maybe Maria Theresa is married to Carlos? Can Naples and Sicily be spun off to them as co-rulers? Those territories were hard to defend from Vienna anyway. In this case Lorraine is successfully defended.

And Leopold John? Could he marry Elizabeth of Mecklenburg—the maybe maybe not Anna Leopoldovna? If Peter II lives she won’t be welcome in Russia and may be a candidate for the Imperial marriage. Long shot/Oddball I know.

Tuscany will most likely go together with Parma to Charles of Spain (eldest son and heir of Elisabetta Farnese) or to his younger brother Philip (son-in-law of Louis XV) if Charles became King of Naples and Sicily (maybe marrying Maria Theresa).
Leopold will have a lot of choices as possible brides:
  • Louis XV’s daughters are unlikely for political reason and for being too young as the eldest (twins Louise Elisabeth, OTL Duchess of Parma and Anne Henriette) are 11 years younger than him.
  • Louis XV missed bride (Mariana Victoria of Spain, eldest daughter of Philip V and OTL Queen of Portugal) instead is a very interesting prospect. She is Leopold’s second cousin (like her OTL husband) and OTL her parents were interested in matches with Austria (between her brothers and Karl VI’s daughters) and here can be interested in a double match between Mariana and Leopold and Charles and Maria Theresa.
  • Elizabeth of Mecklenburg is pretty unlikely (plus she is Protestant, right?)
  • Portugal, Bavaria and Saxony have no princess of the right age for him, I do not know about other German Catholic princesses and I have not searched about any available princess from Modena or Savoy.
I think a double wedding between Mariana and Leopold and Charles and Maria Theresa is the best option (Charles is Duke of Parma and will be Granduke of Tuscany if he can not get/win the Kingdom of Naples and of Sicily or inheriting Spain from his half-brother)
