Maratha Empire Navy via US via France

Ok I know this is out of one of my ASB TLs or the planning for one. But my knowledge about the state of Maratha Empire is some what limited.

Ok here is the set up. During the Quasi-War well ITL equal to it anyways, the USN is much better built up than OTL. With either commossioned on or the shipways 8 second rate ships of the line, 16 heavy frigates, 19 War of Sloops, and 22 sloops. During the Quasi-War the US takes a ship of the line which in turn is commissioned into the USN, but as to the frigates and lesser vessels they are not needed for active duty use by the USN. So they are placed into reserve. Say six frigates, and nine lesser vessels.

In India, the Maratha Empire fights the British to a status quo ante peace in the Second Anglo-Maratha War. This is thanks to improvements to her army, via a American military team and their training program.

Now in 1806-7 the clouds of war are rising between America and the British Empire. The USN since the end of the Quasi-War added even more home built ships to the fleet. Four First Rate ships of the line, 4 frigates, and 8 more War of Sloops. Plus a dozen or so steam batteries for harbor defense. And when the way comes, congress will pass a massive build program. But they still have the six French frigates and nine lesser French vessels in reserve.

Wanting to keep the British busy and streched to the breaking point, America decides to sell these prizes from the Quasi-War with France to the Maratha Empire. Or that's might thought anyways.

War between American and the British Empire doesn't break out for another year or two giving the Maratha Empire time to train with their new ships.

But what I'm after is what king of navy would the Maratha Empire have with these reinforcements, and how would the British react? How many ships would the British move to India to react to this?

None. The East India Company had their own navy, though largely made up of armed merchantmen, and against a total untrained Maratha navy it would totally wipe the floor with its opponent. That's not to mention that the Royal Navy would likely spot the ship being sailed across half the length of the world to reach India and would send out a squadron to either turn the Americans back or simply take the ships off them - which would be interesting, as it would be the one time that the Americans would actually face the British in a proper squadron line-of-battle set piece conflict.

You're absolutely correct

The best any Indian Navy could do is try to play the HEIC, VOC and any French equivalent off against each other and try to defend its coasts asymmetrically

Assuming somehow any Indian Navy acquires European style warships the thing to do would be to keep them huddled in port as a fleet in being behind shore batteries, and sending them out to sea to train in peacetime, maybe within 20 years they can come close to matching the HEIC's fleet

The Maratha Navy, however, was indeed in the process of becoming a modern navy, just as their infantry was completely modern....they suffered from one bad factor, however, bad leadership. That's seemingly been the consensus for a while. IMO, the Marathas could take the EIC Navy, and especially the VOC. You'd need a good leader though.....
