Maratha Confederacy wins the battle of Assaye

I tend to agree at Patton. Without some major structural revamps, the Marathas aren't going to be able to follow up effectively.

What are the effects of this? Can this stop India from becoming a colony?

Frankly, no. But if Arthur Wellesley is killed in the battle, that could have important ramifications for the Napoleonic Wars. The only other commander Britain had who might have been able to do what he did in Spain was Sir John Moore, and in OTL he got himself killed at Corunna.

And strictly speaking India never was a colony, but that's just semantics...

By this point the Marathas were beyond saving, really...

However, if they can beat the Afghans at the Third Battle of Panipat, then they have a real chance...

What about Isaac Brock? He was always bemoaning the fact that he was being wasted in "retirement" in a backwater part of the Empire (doesn't mean he didn't do his job well or that his didn't like British North America mind you, just that he felt he could be used better else where)
