Map Thread XXII

I don't recall what the color scheme is called where Britain is pink (I know it is technically maybe a different color but don't go there lmao), Russia gold, France blue, Japan yellow, and so on, but I don't know if I will ever see it any different from that scheme in my mental menagerie and I will use it again in the future when I get back to cartography as a hobby again. It's a basic default instinct for me at this point lol
Whenever I get back around to my long-promised/threatened map-in-progress, I'll probably use the WTFAWTD colour scheme ;)

But yeah, pink (sorry... "British Red" :openedeyewink: ) has long been tradition for the UK, some shade of blue has long been tradition for France, and for their respective possessions, going back long before competing colour schemes on ah.com was a "thing".... I had read *somewhere* that for maps produced within Russia, that green was usually the traditional colour used for Russia/the USSR, both in Tsarist and Communist times.... so yeah, my Soviet Socialist Republic of Russia is likely to be green, regardless of political orientation :)

Also, I tend not to like, say "bold" reds, or black or shades of grey, for political maps, for the simple reason that they're seldom used in "traditional" printed atlases, or on globes...

Soviet/Russian maps use pink for the USSR/RSFSR/Russian Federation. The United Kingdom is shown in green, China in yellow.

Hmmm... you may know better than I do :)
It's possible to get a lot of bogus info, when one spends WAY too long digging into a topic like "what were the 'traditional' colours used in mapping?"
Also, standards tended to vary from country to country, and weren't always followed by every cartographer, but the British "red" and French blue seem to have been fairly commonplace for a long time.

That was the original UCS - the Universal Colour Scheme. The whole purpose was to have a basic colour scheme that anybody could use that the majority of the board would recognise. There were several early attempts at reformation which resulted in the Russian Green vs Gold argument, and thereafter the primary scheme was the RCS (named for one of our members at the time). TACOS was a splinter that became too big for its britches, I think, but since it uses a lot of the same colours it was allowed to grow (plus it had some handy ATL colours, such as for independent US states, Native American states, and others). Then a bunch of others splintered off from TACOS. Now we have red Turkey, which is unnatural and should be excommunicated.

I usually use NCS

unless I need something it doesn't have (German Brazil, Celtic Spain, etc.).

Gonna have to ask.
What is your favorite colour for Germany?
I'm personally more a fan of dark grey. Although the greyish blue that I rarely see is also pretty nice.

You know what I don't get? The HRE not being a form of yellow-gold. I mean not only would it suit the flag, but it would also fit pretty well in central Europe.

Actually I always just called it the Revised Colour Scheme, the acronym similarity was honestly just a coincidence.

I agree with the standard grey, Prussian blue is a nice color as well, I've always been partial towards how the really detailed HRE Germany map for DoD by @Jared looked, I had it as my folder thumbnail for my maps on my old laptop :3

For me Prussian blue doesn't work thanks to the likes of France and the Nordic countries all being in blue.
It's the same problem as the USSR and Red Turkey.

I just said I like the color, only quite rarely have I ever had an independent Prussia to worry about the color of in my maps. Usually Germany is already grey and meant to stay haha

Little idea of a Weimar Germany ending up with Fascist Italy in a World War.

Isn't meant to be really realistic. Big points being a worse Soviet performance, a more lenient Germany with more rational choices, basically a second Phoney War now with only air and sea raids between Germany and Britain and a German-Italian split between a democratic Germany and Fascist Italy that made peace with Britain.
The Italian team would be made up of Italy, Spain, Greece and Bulgaria.
The German team would be made up of Germany, Czechoslovakia, Hungary, Lithuania, Finland, Norway as well as the collaboration governments of European Belgium, the Netherlands, Denmark and France.
The British would occupy Greenland, Iceland, the Faroe Islands and Svalbard.
Yugoslavia would be in an unnerving neutral ground. Trying to avoid Italian invasion by cooperation with Germany, but not to such a degree that it would cause an Italian invasion.

The Soviets meanwhile prepare...

I feel it would be odd for there to be any government in Greece that would even pretend to be on the side of the Italians and Bulgarians, given they seized all of Thrace, Epirus, Crete, and the rest of their islands. Difficult to see what reason the Norwegians would have to be going onto the German side. I doubt the Spanish are in a position to take Tangiers and Morocco, plus Italy was... Well, I don’t see them getting all that land, though I suppose how Mussolini only asked for the tiny amounts of land occupied by Italy (which was accepted before the offer count be changed) was changed here. I suppose you could show in a sequel map French claims in Europe and Africa, with the Germans being fine with irredentism Italy to the south. A bit cute the Germans gave the Channel Islands to France. Anyways, the Germans till default on all those American loans in this world?
Here's the same map again, but based on my favorite colours.

wait, the Spanish also took Andorra and French Catalonia? They are going to want boats, because the Pyrenees is dangerous and difficult to cross. Probably similar to the alps. How many countries actually fought the British and French in the war?
