This is a map I did with Zveiner to show the most prevalent staple quid or chewing stimulant consumed in a country in Altera. The patterns of quid consumption are conflated as greater transnational territorial blocks (e.g. empires). Although there is some ethnobotany attention paid to each responsible plant, the map is still themed as an infographic/report graphic with an oral health slant. The point of staple stimulant maps like this is to highlight common human experiences, which, ironically, also diverse. Access the rest of the footnotes/explanations on my Patreon. That's a really beautiful map. A few questions:
- Why is Indonesia balkanized so heavily? Collapse after a colonial withdrawal or no colonization in the first place?
- What's going on South Africa? It looks like it has the Apartheid color.
- What year is this?
1. Soft power colonisation, more competition, and less focus on essentially nation building. Most of the territories line up with pre-colonial kingdoms too. TBH i should make a mini colonial map.
2. Dutch never were compelled to give up South Africa to the British, so the territory naturally expanded and won its independence, but at the cost of being an Afrikaner based state
3. Modern day

I promised a more detailed, higher effort version of this earlier, and here it is.

I'm afraid I'm running short on time, so can't provide the full lore here (Would be glad to answer any questions, though). The main story is the struggle of humanity to find a future for itself after an apocalyptic-level alien invasion in the middle of World War I. Also, I really like the Art Deco / Biopunk aesthetic.

Things that didn't make it into the map:
- underground cities in Appalachia, the Carpathians and the Urals
- rise of Latinofuturism in South America
- Integralist Brazil working towards the 'pan-human ultra-race'
- solar-powered Sufi Libya under 'mystic democracy'
- A pan-Latin 'New Roman Empire' ruled from the Vatican
- """Secular Humanism""" ala the Imperium of Man
- Mahdist pan-Africanism in the chaos of North Africa
- Theocratic Russia under the all-seeing eye of Rasputin's clones
- Undersea monorails connecting all major continents
- Rapture-style underwater cities (included but not in all their GLORY)
- Ottomans larping as the second coming of the Abbasids
- Tibet under the Dalai Lama and the light of the ascendant sun
- The half-alien, self-proclaimed Kalki / Hindu messiah fighting a one-man war against the Indian government
- Ahmediyya is the second-largest branch of Islam now.
- Dozens of new religions born during the war - working title of 'Starships and Messiahs'

If you are interested in any of the above bits of awesomeness, please let me know so I can expand this into more maps.

I made a fantasy earth map With Alternate History Elements. Hopefully, It will be well received.

Late Classical Fantasy - Kopya.png

The main point of Divergence precedes the formation of Earth since magic exists in this universe, Implying laws of physics are different. A relevant point of divergence is sometime around 300 B.C. a comet struck the Caspian Sea, heralding a second coming of magic. This caused some mountains and hills to "wake up", creating giants and leading to magic traditions of various earth religions starting to actually work. Overuse of magic caused groups such as Amazones and Anumites to split off from Humans(Ichytophagi is an altogether sister taxa to Homininae that evolved from early Hominids that somehow made their way to Soqotro island and evolved into the "Water Ape Hypothesis Humans" before the comet hit). Serpentines are descendants of Snakes that were used in religious and magical ceremonies. This leads these snakes to develop sentience and magical powers. Eloks are offsprings of Humans with Ticks.

POD: House of Habsburg dies out and the line goes to the Bavarian Wittelsbachs c. ~1760. France successfully becomes a constitutional monarchy and expands ala the Revolutionary Wars hoping to be crowned Holy Roman Emperor replacing the Wittelsbachs. This leads to a new Europe after years of conflict and prevents the unanimous ascendancy of any power or the rise of agglomerate nationalism in Italy and Germany . Russia undergoes a revolution like the French Revolution as a result of a Decembrist Revolt gone to far and spreads their ideology to Poland, the Baltics, Prussia, and other states. From there, history spirals away.

EDIT: multiplied internals
This seems weirdly convergent in places.

Quick mockup of Eritrea in a world where Fascist Italy stayed neutral and aligned towards the UK. Possibly part of a timeline at some point, where Balbo is in charge.
  • Italian Libya was heavily settled by immigrants arriving to work the oil fields (discovered c. 1947), Libya was later integrated into the metropol
  • As a result of no WW2, Libya still has the Aouzou Strip
  • In the Cold War, Italy avoided decolonising East Africa by splitting it into "dominions" of which Eritrea was Italian majority. Fighting in Ethiopia led to Harrar and Amara aligning with Italy while the south and Addis Ababa united to form a new Ethiopia (laying claim to the pre-Italian boundaries)
  • Italy joined WW2 near its end, occupying Austria and parts of Yugoslavia. Under international pressure, Italy did not annex any territory, but Albania (protectorate of Italy) did take some, and Montenegro gained independence as a protectorate. The remainder of Yugoslavia became a socialist state.
  • The Italian Dodecanese aside from Rhodes were returned to Greece, as had been proised in the 1920s. As Rhodes was the only island with Italian settlers, Italy was able to avoid further scrunity from the Allies.

Is there a mental map of countries that the average middle-class American thinks of?
Not sure if this is what you meant but here's my attempt at this.

This is clearly very rough, and the prompt itself is a bit vague, but here are the main countries which I think the average middle class American will think of for one reason or another. This wasn't a deeply scientific approach, but I did spend some time considering which countries to highlight or not, so feel free to ask why I made the country choices I did.

Mongol Victory at Ain Jalut.png

The main point of divergence for this timeline is that Mongol Forces achieve a decisive Victory in Ain Jalut and Conquer All the Way to Morocco in the following Years. Prior to Ain Jalut Mongols saw Islam as an insignificant and worthless religion. Here, this assumption does not change, and Mongol rulers heavily patronage Christianity and Buddhism over Islam, leading to the decline of it in Mongol Held territories with a few exceptions like in Mozabite-Mongol Creole Cultures of Maghreb or The Chinese Muslims belonging to the Gedimu Creed which is seen as the best version of Islam there is by Sinophilic Rulers of Yuan Dynasty due to its syncretism with Philosophical Confucianism and Chinese Patriotic Religion, so much so it spread amongst the Uighurs and in Southeast Asian Muslim Nations. But make no mistake Islam is barely tolerated in most anywhere else at best in the Mongol World. So much so Crusaders and Pontus Romans came to shield Large numbers of Muslims from the Ever Expansionist Cholkhanate of Egypt and Ilkanate of Iran.

Ain Jalut was not the only victory Mongols had in this timeline and did not have in ours. Japan finally succumbed to Mongols after a third attack after Ain Jalut and Was broken. From the Ashes of Japan rose the Ainu who became a maritime people and explored northern coasts until they discovered Alaska, becoming the first to discover the Americas since Vikings.

Europe was also particularly hard hit. Poles fled Westward far more here all the way to East German cities such as Berlin due to the Wrath not the Mongols but Lithuanian Pagans, the Long Arm of the Mongol war machine in Europe. This influx of Catholics ended Reformation in Germany before it even began. Despite this, a Lutheran-like movement still rose in Scandinavia. trauma made Lutherans here far more Zealous and Scandinavia while powerful is a hotbed of extremism and zealotry which threatens to destroy it.

From this Europe rose two different Powers. France was effectively neutered by Lithuanians who went as far west as Paris at their greatest Extent and indeed sacked it twice. Because of this, Iberia became the dominant Latin culture in Western Europe since Pyrenes protected them from even the most adventurous Lithuanian cavalrymen. Other Great Nations are Venice and Suprise Suprise, Britain Both of them were spared Lithuanian horse archer incursions because of their Maritime Nature and pioneered Things such as Democracy(England which had a French revolution-like revolution) and Secularism(Venice).

Kenya, Tanzania, Denmark, Norway, and Belarus are generous.

Kenya/Tanzania are sort of an "either/or" situation where I figure one or the other country might be thought about as your standard African country.

I lumped Denmark and Norway in with Sweden due to how some American politicians on the left will talk about the Nordic model, putting each of those countries in the minds of Americans (although probably not Iceland, due to its geographic distance, or Finland, due to it not really being "Nordic").

Belarus was really only included due to the ongoing conflict, which while primarily between Ukraine and Russia has probably led to more people thinking about Belarus as well.

I know it's not your focus, but the war (and peace) in Europe would be very different without Italy in the Axis.
