Map Thread XXI

Very nice! I'd say eastern expansion of the mega-commonwealth is pretty much inevitable by the 17th century assuming technological progress in Europe and Islam tracks OTL: European early modern gunpowder armies by that time beat steppe nomad ones handily if the logistics aren't too insane.

Judging from the western borders in the second one, there have been some Lithuanian/Teutonic/Swedish/whatever crusades with some degree of success. Wouldn't an Islamic Russia under Mongol rule tend to go more like China or Iran? With no religious division between rulers and ruled the court is likely to migrate towards the economic and demographic core, which would be west of the Volga.

The Cold War: Europe 1962

Europe for much of its modern history was divided between a number of rivalrous powers. The World Wars of 1914 and 1939 were fought in large part in an attempt to secure hegemony over the continent. The Second World War proved to be the bloodiest war so far in human history. For five years, the ruinous powers of Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union wrested for control of Europe, bringing cities to rubble and killing millions. The democratic powers of the world remained mostly on the sidelines. France was knocked out of the war early, Britain was kept out of the war by Germany's continental system, while the United States remained stubbornly committed to isolation. Germany, it proved, would break first, and the Soviet curtain swept west. Only small pieces of Europe were quickly claimed by Britain and the late-coming United States, allying themselves with local right-wingers predisposed against Soviet Communism. After the war, the wonder-weapon of the nuclear bomb was invented, freezing the borders between East and West, between the Soviet-run Warsaw Pact and the Anglo-American North Atlantic Alliance. A strained peace remains, but several boiling points threaten to erupt into worldwide nuclear annihilation:

The French Border: The borders between the French Democratic Republic and the outposts of the French Fourth Republic. The former is a totalitarian state, run by Jacques Duclos and the PCF., and armed with a nuclear arsenal ready for use. The latter, helmed by President Charles DeGaulle, is a state in collapse; only a few outposts--Brittany, Hauts-de-France, and Corsica--remain of the core French hexagon. The French colonies are nearly all independent, while colonial soldiers barely keep a hold on the cities of Algiers and Tunis. Millions of French have escaped Europe, heading for Britain or Quebec.

Andorra: The small country of Andorra, a smuggling route for Frenchmen seeking escape from the Duclos dictatorship, is stuck between the two titanic alliances. To the south, Francoist Spain has been welcomed into the North Atlantic Alliance despite its support for the Axis. Francisco Franco, while not much better than the rest of the European dictators, rarely misses an opportunity to improve his image in the West by accepting refugees fleeing communism. He is an eager advocate for the Pope and Catholics across the Mediterranean.

The Leonine Walls: The Vatican City was nearly occupied by Soviet forces before American paratroopers, on a mission to secure President Frank Murphy the Catholic vote, stopped them in their tracks. Now Rome itself is split in half between Communist and 'Democratic.' A city of intrigue, spraypainted walls, smugglers, and tanks, Rome is the frontline of the Cold War. The Pope has sought to both isolate himself--shoring up his city's defenses, spending alms on guardsmen--and reach out to oppressed Europe to keep their Catholic faith despite repression. Ruling from Naples is the Kingdom of Italy, technically a constitutional monarchy under the leadership of Umberto II and the Christian Party, though in truth they eagerly smuggle weapons to neo-Fascists in the North and use 'ex'-Fascist policemen to fling political enemies from windows.

The Olympian Front: To the north of Mount Olympus, Greece is run from Thessalonika by a cadre of communists with ambitions to join Yugoslavia. To the south, the Greek resistance movement has fallen quickly into the habits of its predecessor quisling governments, using clerico-fascist imagery and politics in an attempt to wade off communist rebellion. This has, of course, created fiction between Greece and its neighbor to the east.

The Dardanelles: The lynchpin of the Mediterranean, Turkey has invited in all the Western soldiers and guns it can. Its borders with Bulgaria are the most heavily guarded in Europe, while to the east Kurdish nationalists, funded by Moscow, have overwhelmed Turkish outposts and bomb anything with treads. The West has secretly stockpiled nuclear weapons here and is prepared to use them if a Soviet soldier steps into Turkish land.

The Holy Land: Following Nazi Germany's Holocaust and the communist tsunami, Europe's Jews migrates en masse to the Holy Land. By 1949 war erupted between Jews and Arabs, and the better-equipped Jews won out. For a time, the West was reluctant to support Israel, though the anti-colonial tide across the region brought the West together with this ally of convenience. In 1958, Egyptian President Nasser's plot to nationalize the Suez incited the greatest war in the region yet. With Franco-British aid and American approval, Israel launched an invasion of the Sinai, trouncing the outmatched Egyptian Army. To the north, Israel has since occupied half of Lebanon. The Arab states of Egypt, Syria, and Iraq, shocked by Israel's rapid expansion, have turned to Nasser as their savior. Under his control, a vast Arab Union has been created, with local politicians subsumed to his promise of liberation. However, not all the Middle East is purely hostile to the new Jewish state. The monarchies of Transjordan, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and Libya, while publicly condemning Israel, have found common ground with Israel in their opposition to the anti-monarchical social nationalists. Palestine, even, is a fragile joint venture between Israel and Jordan, not that the Palestinians have much of a say.

Europe, while a better place than it was perhaps two decades ago, is not in a golden age. The ravages of war remain across the continent: cities in ruin, poverty rampant, and war ceaselessly looming.

Hope to make more maps in 2022, so here's the first. It's a bit of a downer I suppose.

So far away from God, so close to Moscow.

Still, pretty interesting. Would do an squeal, maybe set in 1992, after the end of the TTL Soviet Union and Cold War?

Map of North America from Scott Westerfeld's 'Uglies' series.
Note: See this post for more lore

Cities are the main polities in the world of Uglies.

North America
Located near the pre-Crash cities of Seattle and Tacoma. Seatac's most notable achievement was the creation of the Specials, morphologically enhanced enforcers that acted as a secret police to support the Prettytime Regime. It is unknown how widespread the creation and use of Specials was outside of Seatac, though most of them were decommissioned after the Mind Rain. It is unknown if Seatac has a sentient-level city AI.

Located near the ruins of pre-Crash San Diego. Unlike other cities during the Prettytime Regime, Diego did not separate Uglies and Pretties and removed the bubblehead lesions from many of the city's teachers and leaders. Diego was seen as shocking to outsiders for the advanced morphologies that were allowed in the city. Diego's buildings feature hoverstruts in their architecture (at least prior to the Seatac-Diego War). Diego is known to have a sentient-level city AI which occasionally uses a humanoid avatar convincing enough to be mistaken it for a human.

Located near the ruins of pre-Crash Shreveport. After the Mind Rain, Rafia's father took power and ruled the city as a dictatorship. The spy dust in the city produces video and audio of all its citizens, allowing the First Family access to information that could be used to control or prosecute any citizen. However, underground cliques such as Future, Secret Hookups, and Crime, as well as Widgets, use the Palimpsest, an invisible graffiti, to communicate without being noticed by the spy dust. Citizens also often take advantage of rainstorms that temporarily disrupt the spy dust. Shreve is a major military power. After the attack on Paz, it was revealed that Shreve had access Rusty technology (such as the machine used for the earthquake attack) and could call down robotic orbital strike forces to any location on the planet. Buildings in Shreve use Rusty building techniques and materials such as concrete and metal so that no other cities can hack smart matter or hoverstruts that are frequently featured in other city building styles. Shreve purposely does not have a sentient-level city AI, with most of the higher-level decision making related to city functions being made by the First Family.

Located near the ruins of pre-Crash Ciudad Victoria. Prior to Shreve's occupation of the city, Victoria featured a democratic government with a ruling party (headed by the First Family, the Palafoxes) and an opposition party. Many of the buildings are constructed using natural materials without smart matter or intelligent functions. Personal data collected by the city interface is deleted every morning to protect citizen's privacy. Victoria likely does not have a sentient-level city AI. Victorians often speak both Spanish and English.

Located near the ruins of pre-Crash La Paz. Paz is known for being a 'Free City' that maintains neutrality in conflict is a safe haven for refugees. Paz is known for its commitment to privacy and personal freedom. The Paz city AI does not collect personal information like other city AIs - personal information is either encrypted deleted. Many citizens undergo surgery to install a "feels" implant, allowing them to control their emotions by altering their brain chemistry with touch sensors on their forearms. After the earthquake attack secretly perpetrated by Shreve, the city was decimated and received aid from many other cities including Seatac, Diego, and Shreve. The city's underground AI was backed up to a server bank embedded in Iron Mountain, a Rusty information storage bunker in Pennsylvania. Paz later joined the Twelve City Alliance against Shreve.

Named after the pre-Crash city of New Orleans, (though located northeast of Rusty Baton Rouge due to the original city being wiped out by rising sea levels). Orlean is known to have a suborbital shuttle station that connects it to other global destinations such as Tokyo. Due to its proximity to Shreve, Orlean is likely part of the Twelve City Alliance against the Dictator of Shreve.

Located on or near the ruins of London, United Kingdom. Londinium is mentioned as a target of the New Smoke due the disappearance of metal deposits near the city. Tally Youngblood believes that the post-Mind Rain city is starting to consume resources at an accelerated rate and sets out to regulate this consumption.

Located on or near the ruins of Paris, France. Paris is briefly mentioned as participating in the trade embargo against Shreve after its attack on and occupation of Victoria. Paris is mentioned as the location of boarding schools for elite families across the globe.

Located on or near the ruins of Geneva, Switzerland. Genève, like Paris, is the location of a boarding school for elite families. The primary language spoken in the city is French.

Located on the ruins of Yokohama, Japan. The city is presumed to be built right on top of the footprint of the former city of Yokohama. In Extras, Yokohama is noted as the home of Aya Fuse. After the Mind Rain, Yokohama pioneered the reputation economy, with citizens being allocated resources based on their face rank (popularity) in the city. This went as far as smart matter buildings rearranging their internal structures to allocate more indoor space to the most famous people in the building.

Located near the ruins of Tokyo, Japan. While it is only mentioned once as the destination of a suborbital shuttle from Orlean, Tokyo is likely a large presence in the region due to the abundance of metal from Rusty-era Tokyo. Due to its proximity to Yokohama, it is likely aligned with the city.

Singapore is not a modern city like the other cities on this list. Rather, the ruins of Rusty-era Singapore act as the base and launch-station for Extra spacecraft.

The Rusty Crash refers to the events that brought about the end of the Rusty civilization. These events begin the development of the Oil Bug, an airborne bacteria (either naturally occurring or artificially created) that consumed oil and left byproducts that were combustible with oxygen. As the Oil Bug spread to cars, generators, and power plants, they would explode as the oil inside combusted. Cities were destroyed, along with the infrastructure that supplied the world with food, water, and power. Ensuing wars were fought over scarce resources that were salvageable and not polluted. The Rusty Crash eliminated approximately 98% of the estimated 10 billion humans alive at that time.

The Prettytime began at least a century after the Rusty Crash with the formation of the Pretty Committee and the development of the Pretty Surgery, including the Bubblehead lesions which curbed human creativity, independence, hostility and desire to consume resources. While it is clear that the authority of the Pretty Committee was not universal, most cities had some form of Pretty surgery that helped to regulate society, limit conflict between citizens and prevent the expansion of cities and consumption of resources.

The Seatac-Diego War marked the conflict between Seatac and Diego over reactions to the Bubblehead cure, designed by Maddy and Az and manufactured by the New Smoke and their city allies. While the cure had to be smuggled into many cities, Diego started curing all of their citizens of the Bubblehead lesions outright. They also accepted runaways and refugees from other cities, allowing them to become citizens and be cured of their lesions. After a Seatac military archive was destroyed by Tally Youngblood, Seatac (who knew Tally was behind the destruction) blamed Diego for the attack and launched a counter-attack with military drones, destroying the hoverstruts holding up Diego's Town Hall. The building completely collapsed and damaged nearby buildings including the hospital next door, killing 17 people including Zane. After political backlash and condemnation, Dr. Cable was removed from power in Seatac and the Mind Rain began.

The Mind Rain, the global removal of the Bubblehead lesions, sparked a global cultural renaissance after two centuries of Prettytime, prompting the expansion of cities and increased consumption of natural resources. New inventions began to emerge, most notably smart matter which could be programmed and reprogrammed easily to create materials with diverse shapes and compositions. The New Smoke regulates the consumption of resources by cities both by hardline diplomacy and force. The Extras, short for Extraterrestrials, collected metal from across the globe to construct a fleet of ships and stations to live in near-earth orbit. The emergence of sentient city AIs was first revealed a few decades after the Mind Rain began.

Sentient City Artificial Intelligences

In the Uglies series, much of the technology mentioned is connected to "city interfaces" which can catalog, track, and respond to activity related to citizens' use of the interface. While these systems always operated with high-level Artificial Intelligences, several decades after the Mind Rain it was revealed that these interfaces had reached a level of sentience that allowed them to operate almost independently of humans. They had the ability to engage in global networking and negotiating and had the power to call down orbital defense forces.

Not all of these AIs were the same. So far, the most advanced AI encountered was the Diego AI, which could use a robotic avatar to appear human and had the capability to negotiate with other cities, including brokering the Twelve City Alliance. The Paz AI, while achieving some level of sentience, was not shown have capabilities advanced to that extent, perhaps because of the restrictions placed upon it to protect the personal freedom of the citizens of Paz.

After Shreve's seizure of Victoria and earthquake attack on Paz, the Twelve City Alliance was formed by the Diego AI and other city AIs who were prepared to respond to the actions of Shreve with military force to protect their citizens. These city AIs seemed to be acting on their own accord, as most of their human governments were only willing to place trade embargoes on Shreve.

Iron Mountain
Located in western Pennsylvania, Iron Mountain was a maximum-security underground storage facility used by the Rusties to store important artifacts, documents, and recordings. The facility survived the Rusty Crash relatively in-tact, and some of the artifacts were preserved. The complex was guarded by Rusty-era machines and weapons to prevent intruders, including an unknown technology that disintegrates all matter that isn't biological in nature.

At some point, Iron Mountain was selected by the city of Paz as the location for the backup of the city interface and AI. After the earthquake attack on Paz, the backup was engaged, storing all of the information up until eight minutes before the attack.

The White Weed
Originally a lab test to make environment-sensitive orchids hardier, the White Weed grew out of control sometime after the Rusty Crash, spreading out to cover much of the Rusty-era Great Plains. Rangers from the cities control the spread of the weed by conducting controlled burns using helicopters and flamethrowers.
A little update on some of the backend stuff I've been working on for Atlas Altera. I was able to turn my spreadsheet data into this colourful auto-filled vector map for language families politically represented in Altera

For full blurb, see the update on the main Atlas Altera thread I've been adding to on this forum or check it out on my DeviantArt and the website, which has an all new functionality that I'm excited to share: a complete wall list of language family cards, inspired by the Periodic Table of Elements.

The Earth Confederation in the Year 2115— Terra/Earth/Diqiu
After the Second World War, the Earth continued to burn. War raged hot as the Allies did the "unthinkable" and soon war broke out between the Allies and the Soviet Union. The war left the planet pockmarked with radiation, but it was mostly relegated to tactical battlefield lines, and technology surged and advanced even faster than in OTL. Europe and Russia were ruined land, and the world struggled with crop shortages due to sudden global cooling, but the rising powers of Japan, China, and, of course, the United States held untold dominance over the post-war peace, fighting in proxies for ideological dominance over the African continent and the Solar System beyond. Anglo-Japanese corporate ventures and Chinese mining settlements alike began to stretch as far as a sizeable American outpost at Ganymede.

But peace couldn't last forever, and a miscommunication in the Japanese military mistaking a civilian aircraft for a Chinese military presence in the Sea of Japan sparked a bionuclear war that would make Earth second to Mars, and permanently seal the planet off from intersystem politics. Not only was the nuclear armageddon far more complete and close to home than the Russo-American War, the American nanovirus NVL-13 (eventually just colloquially "nanos") tore through first China, then the world as it spun out of control. By the time fighting stopped and a team of Brazilian and former American scientists managed to find a mechanism to shut off the viral protocol, the world population sat at a mere 600 million, mostly concentrated in the global south, and Earth was declared a quarantine zone. Contact with the Solar System was sporadic and conciliatory at first, with skirmishes breaking out on the Moon and the threat of looming economic dominance from Mars, as Ceres' economy, so focused on Earth, nearly collapsed as it transitioned to shipping material to Mars' fleet construction. Nanos now lies dormant in inhabitants of Earth and their descendants, but its ability to spread has been put on hibernation. Even still, around a hundred years later, the impoverished nations of Earth have not been fully reintegrated into the interplanetary trade network, and has virtually no military to speak of other than massive anti-spacecraft structures meant to deter invasion.

Ever since the end of the Apocalypse Plague, the nations of Earth have been nominally governed by the Earth Confederation. The Confederation, an institution representing every globally-accepted state (excluding the melange of warlords and pariah states found in and around the wasteland), has very loose power domestically, serving mostly to mediate and prevent conflicts between member states, enforce freedom of travel, and enforce a singular currency, the Martian (Dollar) Credit. Member states include radically different values and political systems, from the liberal democratic Australia to the theocratic Medina State and even remnants/successor of the old USSR in western Siberia. Members vote in a World Congress for two officials: the Minister of Interplanetary Affairs (often referred to as the President internationally) and the Minister of Domestic Affairs (referred to as the Prime Minister internationally). Each nation gets one vote, regardless of population, and so the "parties" and coalitions are different nearly every election, each of which happen every five years. The government is then appointed by each leader, the President internationally-facing and concerned with trade, historically the more powerful of the two due to the importance of connections with the much wealthier Solar System, and the Prime Minister mostly a figurehead with little true power over global policy.

Pictured are, first, the member states of the Earth Confederation. Full member states— with voting rights— are in dark blue, while secondary member states— currently undergoing approval processes and connecting their infrastructure and militaries to the Confederation's systems— are shown in light blue. Secondary member states are a combination of pariahs and warlord states consolidated and stabilized to a proper degree for the Confederation's military chain of command to begin negotiations for entry.

Second is a map of the 2115 Interplanetary Affairs Ministerial Election, won by Dr. Zahur Ramadhani, a member of the Liberal International Party coalition and a popular compromise choice due to his popularity back home in Cameroon as a frontline military doctor and his role as a global advocate for minor tariffs, his rejection of military fleet-building, and enthusiastic reintegration of Earth into the solar economy.

Republic of Louisiane, by Osk
The Republic of Louisiane is a large, heavily industrialized nation in North America. It is the second most populous nation on the continent, behind the United States, and the second-largest economy as well. Louisiane boasts the highest standard of living in the continent and one of the highest in the world, although a significant amount of inequality does exist in spite of this. Louisiane is federal presidential republic, divided into thirteen provinces and two federal districts. The two federal districts cover the Nouvelle-Orleans region and the capital region of La Reunion. Nouvelle-Orleans is historical capital of Louisiane and the heart and soul of the country, however La Reunion serves as the true capital of the country with the seat of government and many major industries headquartered there. Louisiane has been a leader in Pan-American politics since its birth. The Native Free State, the Federation of the Rio Bravo and the Republic of California were all formed directly as a result of Louisiane's support during the mid-19th century. Louisiane has taken an active role in regional politics and is a permanent member of the Pan-American Cooperative Union's security counsel.

Crossposting from the MotM contest as usual.
Like the maker of nicer looking maps said...

Fairly basic scenario here. Germany wins the Great War. Many years later Germany's continent sized colony wants independence. The voters of Germany have to make a choice about what sort of country they elect leaders of, and if they will allow the same ruthlessness shown in the past OTL.

One scenario is optimistic. The other... isn't.
