Poseidon's Chosen Nation
The High Kingdom of Atlantis is a nation right off the coast of Europe. Settled by Ancient Greek Colonizers during the Late Bronze Age Era, Atlantis chose Poseidon, his family and Oceanus to be their patron Gods, with the Trident as a symbol and names in honor of these deities being common place. For hundreds of years, Atlantis remained politically fractured, until the rise of the Phoenician City States all across the North African coast. Around 700 BCE, with the rise of the maritime powers of the Mediterranean creating an economic vacuum, the petty king of Tritonopolis, Atlantor I united all of colonized Atlantis, becoming the High King of the united Atlantis. As such, Atlantis is considered in modern times to be the oldest monarchy on the planet, as the House of Atlantor continues to rule Atlantis to this day. This unity of Atlantis was fractured however, as the rivalries between the city states continued even after unification, and the system of allowing the petty kings to retain their positions as autonomous royals created many civil wars in Atlantis. This situation was finally resolved for some centuries when in 138 BCE, when High King Tritonius III The Great managed to exert Royal Authority throughout the borders. The reign of Tritonius III was extremely peaceful and prosperous and this remained the situation in Atlantis until the Romans completed their conquest of Iberia in 19 BC, which saw an influx of Celtic Iberian tribes fleeing from the Roman government into Atlantis. The Celts and Atlanteans had been natural trading partners, with the Celts being Atlantis’s trading gateway to Europe, and the Atlanteans being the resource hub for the Celts. As a result, Atlantis supported Celtic resistance against Rome, until the Romans decided to land an invasion fleet in 2 BCE at the mouth of the Great Thalassan Bay. A standoff ensued for two years until the weak minded King Atlantor V gave into Roman demands and stopped giving Celts the incentive to revolt. The Romans left not soon after, unwilling to stay so long so across treacherous waters.
This cowardice brought with it renewed tensions as anti and pro-Roman factions in Atlantis fought with one another over multiple civil wars. Eventually Christianity also made its way over to Atlantis in around 100 AD, but unlike the other places associated with Ancient Mediterranean, the Atlanteans by and large rejected Christianity, remaining true to the Olympian Pantheon – which in Atlantean folk memory had evolved to displace Zeus with Poseidon as the King of the Gods. When Rome fell in 476 AD, the Atlanteans rejoiced, for the anti-Roman faction had come to power in 389 AD, having basically turned the High King into a prisoner in his own palace. This Dictatorship, called the Autocracy of Potamoi was overthrown brutally by pro-Royalists in the Revolution of 716 AD. This upheaval however allowed Arab traders and pirates to make small colonies in the southern and mostly uninhabited region of Atlantis bringing Islam with them. Most of the Arabs that settled southern Atlantis, or
Filantis to the Arabs, were from Morocco and mostly Berber by genetics. At the same time, King Tritonius VI allowed Visigothic refugees from the Islamic Invasion to settle down in small parts of northern Atlantis as well.
Eventually the small Arab colonies turned into city states, and eventually into kingdoms, with the rise of Sultan Muhammad Almanzor I who united Filantis (
Islamic Atlantis) in the south for the first time in 923 AD. This eventually led to conflict between the High Kingdom of Atlantis and the Sultanate of Filantis until the Marriage of 1381. The House of Almanzor had been reduced by war to a single woman, Rabia, who married King Atlantor XII if Filantis gained permanent cultural and religious autonomy, which he granted through the Charter of Zahran.
For the next 400 years, Atlantis remained an isolationist country, eventually colonizing all of its lands until the 7 Years War, when Spain made an attempt to ally itself with Atlantis against Portugal. Atlantis refused, and this led to the Spanish Blockade of Atlantis, which forced High Queen Penelope II to side with the British. At the end of the 7 Years War, Penelope II made Atlantis’s neutrality firm internationally recognized, and took massive amounts of economic reparations. Atlantis remained neutral in the Revolutionary Era and also remained neutral during the Napoleonic Wars, though it took on a pro-British stance as the Continental Blockade against Britain hurt its economy. During the 1830s, Atlantis started to industrialize, slowly but surely. In WW1, Atlantis’s neutrality was broken when the German ships headed for the Ottoman Empire by mistake fired on Atlantean patrol ships. The Germans got away but were identified and the Atlanteans declared war on the Central Powers in late 1914. Though some 200,000 Atlantean soldiers did fight in France and Italy and even in Gallipoli against the Central Powers, the main Atlantean contribution came in the form of resources, as Atlantis was brimming in them, and in Versailles, Atlantis received Togo as a colony and many economic reparations. In WW2, Atlantis remained neutral until 1942, after the submarine warfare became too much to bear. Atlanteans served against the Axis powers in North Africa, France and Italy. Atlantis became a founding member of NATO and eventually joined the EU later onwards as well. Today, Atlantis is a modern and powerful European nation.
